Ken Griffin vows to 'double down' on Miami move, says NYC 'doesn't welcome success'

Billionaire Ken Griffin reaffirmed Citadel's move to Miami at the Milken Conference, citing his feud with NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani over tax policy changes.

Billionaire and Citadel CEO Ken Griffin repeated his company's intentions to "double down" on moving to Miami in the wake of his feud with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

"When we moved from Chicago, there was a debate between New York and Miami," Griffin said at the 2026 Milken Institute Conference on Tuesday. "It's unquestionably true that we made the right choice. I'll leave it at that."

Griffin was responding to Mamdani's viral Tax Day video, which singled out Griffin's Manhattan penthouse while announcing a new pied-à-terre tax.

"Now what the mayor of New York has made clear to my partners, and principally my New York partners, is that we need to double down on our bet in Miami because we want to be in a state that embraces business, embraces education, embraces personal freedom and liberty," he said. "And that embraces people having an opportunity to live the American dream, a dream of earned success, not a dream of distributive handouts that leave people dependent on government for their lives and their livelihoods in a way that takes away their dignity and honor."

"We've seen a mass exodus of business leadership from California to Texas and Florida. Mamdani's making it very clear. New York doesn't welcome success," Griffin added.

Employees would see an automatic "pay raise" of let's say 10% to almost 15% just on reduced taxes alone!!!

But the top Republican senator behind the text says it’s not for the ballroom. This comes despite Trump and the White House stressing the ballroom’s necessity for security after the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner last week.

On Monday evening, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) released the legislative text for its part of the proposed reconciliation bill.



Republicans hope to pass an additional spending bill to fund Immigration and Customs Enforcement as well as Customs and Border Protection after Democrats opposed including funding in the annual Homeland Security spending bill.

But the bill also sets aside money $1 billion between the fiscal years of 2026 and 2029 “for the purposes of security adjustments and upgrades” within the perimeter of the White House Compound to support enhancements by the U.S. Secret Service “relating to the East Wing Modernization Project.”

But Grassley’s spokesperson said the money would not go toward the ballroom, pointing to part of the legislative text that says “None of the funds made available under this section may be used for non-security elements of the East Wing Modernization Project.”



“It provides funds for Secret Service enhancements, including, but not limited to security enhancements related to the East Wing Modernization Project,” Hannah Akey, a spokesperson for Grassley, told The Independent over email. “This necessary funding will ensure all presidents, their families and their staffs are adequately protected.”

Akey said the money would be for securing the White House compound and how it must be secured during the current threat environment.

The orange person went from projected cost of $200 million to $400 million in less then 30 days.

Remember, the border was wide open during 2024 so that number is probably more.
