Incredible!!I went clamming yesterday and had a blast. Without a doubt the best clamming I have seen in many years. I have probably clammed every way possible including dredging where we caught over a hundred bushels of clams a day in three to four hours. My crew was my wife. She handled the back deck while I drove the boat and handled the setting and hauling of the dredge. It was crazy how many clams we were catching. As a kid I tonged, raked and treaded clams. My favorite to this day is treading and using my small, knife blade rake while in the water. Clams are roaring back in the GSB and the GSB has always been known for quality clams. The clams I caught yesterday were some of the best tasting clams I have had in forty years. Also, I think my prayers are being answered, I'm catching a few bay scallops. The water is clean and the size of the scallops were incredibly large for this time of the year. Hopefully last year's scallops released enough spat (larvae) so we can get a set of GSB bay scallops. I don't know how many of you remember scalloping in the 70's and early 80's off East Island in Islip Town waters but the it was unbelievable. Twenty bushels a day was easy to catch. The problem was shucking that amount. We hired shuckers and went everyday we could. Scallops only live about two years in the bay. Treading in the spring and summer would indicate how the fall scallop harvest was going to be as we caught scallops while treading. A few years back I predicted the return of the hard clams. This time I'm happy to say, I think the scallops are going to make a dramatic comeback over the next couple of years. We only need to get one really good set and keep the clean, high salinity water coming into the bay. To catch a five gallon bucket is easy with a crab net and a pair of waders. A five gallon bucket will yeild you four pounds of delicious scallops.
Now for tonights menu. Clams. I made New England Clam Chowder. I didn't spare the calories and used heavy cream. It was so delicious with a nice crusty bread. I like to add a dozen diced shrimp sauteed in toasted sesame oil for a little treat.
