Thirty years later and I'm still baffled by people who need to challenge the meme: Remember, every dead body on Everest was once a highly motivated individual.

Interesting that some people need a kind of self-fulfillment, find a purpose, make your life meaningful cause. If it's not climbing a mountain that's been climbed a hundred times before, it's extrapolating a political cause that was won decades ago, or inventing their own.

Just read an interview with Jon Krakauer, the author of that book that was turned into the movie.
It's the 30th anniversary of the 1996 disaster, he summitted that day and was the 631st person to do it.
Since his summit another 13,000 people have done it - not exactly rare company like it used to be.
