Copy and paste from another board, but too good not to share here too:
It's my birthday today, so I couldn't possibly go the full 24 hours without fishing. I noticed the wind app called for the east winds to die down around 5pm for a couple hours, so I headed out at 5. The weathermen were right for a change. There were still some east rollers to deal with, but no wind waves or white caps. I headed to a spot on the CT side where I knew there would be a nice rip around some rocks on the outgoing tide. Rolled up and found a 17 inch schoolie on the first cast. Then what looked like the same fish on the second cast. so I quickly dropped anchor to fan cast the spot. Proceeded to nail them almost every cast, but they were all 17-19 inches. I counted 17 before I decided to switch lures (I was throwing my favorite shad I keep talking about). Since I knew the schoolies were biting, I wanted to try a lure that I've never had much luck with to see if I could figure it out. So I clipped on a classic smiling bill bucktail with a otter tail straight strip trailer. I've literally never caught a fish on one before despite hearing how amazing they are. So I needed to break the duck and now was the time. First cast and I sized up to a 24 incher. Then a 27 incher. Then an absolute monster that was peeling out drag for what felt like 30 seconds straight before it cut me off in the rocks. I could not turn this fish with my schoolie tackle. I was using 15 lb braid and 30 lb leader and a 3000 size reel. So I retied and put another bucktail on and caught a few more schoolies and then it happened again. Another freight train of a bass. I had tightened my drag a bit and I also jumped up on my transom livewell to get more height and held the fish above the rocks for a while. Fought it for about 5 minutes before it took it's third or fourth run and I couldn't stop it. cut me off in the rocks again. I grabbed a stouter set up after this, 30 lb braid and 50lb leader and a 4000 size reel. But of course I didn't get any hits on that. It was getting dark and I was supposed to be home for my birthday dinner, so I called it quits. I'm sure I could have gotten into more, or I could have brought some bunker and chunked up all I could want.
Finally tally was 23 bass in just about 80 minutes. And two bass that I would guess would be above slot with some new piercings. I crushed the barbs so hopefully they will shake the bucktails out.
Happy birthday to me!
Notes: 67 degree water, anchored in 14 feet dropping to 11 feet due to tide. Casting anywhere from 14 feet to 6 feet. The shad I'm talking about is the fishaholic finback shad in both bunker and wonderbread, paired with the 3/4 oz jighead that is designed for it. you can find them at J&H tackle.
