I didn't know there was "overlap" before, which is very common in Japan. What is interesting is the loss of the Honda label and marketing glitz that goes long with that. "Oh look that boat has a Honda on it, I love my Accord!!" works much better than "WTF is a Tohatsu???"
No matter how you slice it, it will be viewed as a "downgrade" for Honda outboards from less knowledgeable boat owners...
All outboards STINK compared to a diesel , E Tec's happen to stink less lately , so E Tec it is .............. 4 strokes in general have a lot of internal corrosion issues ....... Older Carbed Yammy was a winner , of course they stopped production a few years back .......
Honda did / does has one of the better reputations
The bigger Tohatsus are already Hondas; other than the cowling cover, the internals are 100 percent Honda. It’s really a shame that Honda doesn’t do more R&D with their marine outboards as they really are the Hondas of marine engines. I’ve owned three and they are quiet, fuel efficient and exceedingly reliable. It would not shock me if they did in fact decide to sell to Tohatsu....
