Can anyone identify this queen bee? About an inch and half plus or so long, brownish wings,
Black abdomen with mostly whitish tinge of yellowish stripes. Don’t think it is a yellow jacket queen?? Been buzzing around my grass for two days.

If it was flying above the lawn it’s a cicada killer they seek and destroy cicadas you might find mounds of soil an inch too high or wide were they are

If it was flying above the lawn it’s a cicada killer they seek and destroy cicadas you might find mounds of soil an inch too high or wide were they are

Looks like a ground digger wasp.

They love unfertilized lawns that have soft sandy earth.

They dont bite or bother you if you walk around or through them, they are too busy.

Swarm low over ground for a few hours each day around the same time sun hits area for the first time of day.

Got stung once on the head and my friend on his arm in the same week. Neither of us had a clue other then they were huge and felt like a hammer pounding flesh for 10 hours straight. We had looked them up to find that same name. Nothing like a bee or yellow jacket where in an hour the sting is forgotten. They sound like a miniature prop plane and also fly at night, at least the ones did in front my home in ridge years back.
I’ve seen the holes I believe they dug. Easily fit a thumb in it. They do swarm like bees. I found that out when they took up residence in a tree next to where I parked my bike to hunt years back.

Killed a few back in the day. I hit one with a tennis racket and the other I dropped a cinderblock on. 2 separate occasions.

Wow! Crazy stuff. Yes it was buzzing around the lawn over the same spots. Looks just like it, pretty much exact.

she's been hanging out all week every morning until early afternoon...apparently growing fond of my Tiki torches. The relationship is good so far.... I walk nearby, she flaps her wings, I move away, she fly's around and lands back on the Tiki torch......weird stuff !!
