Coronavirus

Dad's on his second Covid positive this year, this time with pneumonia.
They're talking intubation but I'm telling my sister (POA and Health proxy) to resist because that was the end early on.

He's in a negative pressure room now, time will tell. :(

Fingers crossed... Although many think it's over, it ain't over yet...

The 3 co-workers I interact with most - all out with Covid. I hadn't been hanging out with Dad in over 2 weeks, so I know I didn't give it to him. One co-worker is pregnant and due Sunday - I feel so bad for her.

Every home test I've given myself is negative - hard to believe 3 years into this is the worst its been for me personally.

Just wondering but the people we know of getting more than just a head cold, were they vaxxed, were they boosted? We haven’t gotten it yet but like us, all the friends that caught the virus were vaccinated and iirc had gotten the first booster. But not that sick and not long haulers.

I don't know - I have both shots and 1 booster. All home tests are negative with a lot of exposure.
I am O-negative, so I've got that going for me.

My wife’s cousin her husband and son all tested positive yesterday. My wife and son where with them a couple days ago but so far are fine and tested negative

Concerts, restaurants, schools, travel......normal activities have resumed but unfortunately, people were growing tired of talking about COVID and it's implications.

What I see is a growing trend of pneumonia among second timers and respiratory distress among children.

Even working in a hospital, I see the lax in following guidelines.

All we can do is use our intelligence to make the best decision for ourselves and our families and try not to let politics guide those decisions.

Best of luck with your Dad!

In general, were they vaccinated?

I’ll be keeping dad and the family in my thoughts and prayers.

Why you may soon have to pay for that COVID-19 test

The federal government is poised to stop paying for COVID-19 vaccines, tests and treatments in the coming months, shifting the costs onto the public.

Experts say most Americans are not aware that this will happen and will be in for a major case of sticker shock. They warn without additional protections or funding, the transition to commercialized treatments and preventive services will lead to health barriers.

Instead of free access to tests and treatments like Paxlovid, insurance companies and manufacturers will set the price.

The days of free, easily accessible COVID-19 tests will also likely end. Private insurance may not cover over-the-counter tests anymore, and patients may need a prescription first for a PCR test.
Health experts and advocates have expressed concern that without the federal government’s involvement, drug companies may start charging exorbitant prices.

Pfizer said it expects to quadruple the cost of its COVID-19 shot, and charge between $110 and $130 a dose once the government contract ends, possibly by early next year.

Eli Lilly’s monoclonal antibody treatment is already being sold directly to providers at a list price of $2,100 per dose, though it may not be effective against some of newer omicron subvariants.

With increased prices, consumers with private insurance could face tiered benefits to limit utilization or face medical necessity determinations.

For the uninsured, the barriers could be huge. And if there’s a winter surge of infections, there could be significant consequences.

“If we do get another surge, it could be a real problem,” said Corlette. “Testing services will probably not be as widespread. People will face cost sharing, uninsured folks … will have to pay out of pocket for tests and vaccines. So, it’s a potentially scary situation.”

We got our second booster in late August so it would be "effective," FWIW, during our Rome to Spain cruise in mid September. Got our flu shots ten or twelve days after we got back in late September. (First and last time I caught the flu was in 1995 and had to use sick days that I would have instead used to go fishing!) Putting off this latest"new and improved" virus booster another month or three. I do believe this will be an annual thing, but what happened to the single shot that would incorporate both ?

You can get both shots on the same day.

My guess is most would prefer separate shots. I know I do.

Except for some soreness in the arm, I avoided any further discomfort with either shot. I think they put them in different arms but wasn't there some word about the same shot having both ?
