Curious, lets say you want to clean up the boat or rig up the rods (just an example) and you ask a friend take over for a bit.
You still OK?

I think they were pretty specific regarding ANYONE OPERATING A MOTORVESSEL in New York Waters has to be certified.

Just in case, I went ahead a few years ago and did the online class so I gots me my sirtificate, lest I visit an LI friend and have to take the helm...

Being a guy who does trolling I did ask a reliable source. Most of the time it’s my buddy and I and we alternate turns manning the reals. And operating the boat if you get stopped and he doesn’t have a certificate it is a chance of a summons. Again this hasn’t been confirmed but I’m pretty sure that is how it’s gonna be.

I think it's a good thing for anyone operating a boat to take this class. Specifically, many guys who have operated a boat for many years STILL don't know right of way rules and what different bouys mean.

I will look at is a refresher/reminder opportunity to refamiliarize myself with some things we take for granted

Just so I am more specific....

When I put the boat in the water, usually at Mount Siani, when we are headed for the Sound, I like to stow the bummers and line, may take care of a few things that need to be stowed. I like to keep the boat neat. At that time, I usually have whoever I’m with take the boat out. After all, it is a 5 MPH speed limit.

On the other hand, when I return from the Sound, I like to stow the rods, get the lines ready that I need and put out the bumpers and generally clean up a bit.

I always keep an eye on where they are going. If another boat is passing or coming at us, I keep an eye on the situation.

True enough, even when they're totally inane...

I sincerely doubt that once you've cleared the breakwater and you're out on the Sound, they'll be any enforcement checks. However, there's a much higher chance in the harbor.

Regardless, wasn't this law enforced in steps according to age and this year is the first time everyone has to be certified? If that's the case, has there been any specific enforcement activity of it in previous years?

Brianna's Law has good intentions. Boat Guy- until your buddy gets his own certificate direct HIM as to where everything should be stowed away or cleaned ! If he has been freeloading a fishing trip all along he should do more than just buy the bait, lol ! After I got rid of my last stinkboat 4 seasons back I realized I don't see as many asshats while kayaking since I normally fish in back bay 5mph zones. While most of my local bay constables couldn't tell you the difference between a weak and a blue, much less the regs on a fish, they do go after safety violators. Happy New Year all !

I am an instructor for the NY State Safe Boating Program
NY was one of the few states that did not require a Safe Boating Certificate

The law was changed and compliance was phased in over a five year time frame
AS of January 1st of this year. everyone regardless of age must have a Safe boating certificate to operate
a boat in NY State
Anyone 14 years old or older who wants to operate a PWC/Jet Ski in NY must have a safe boating certificate
14 years is the minimum age to operate a Jet Ski in NY State

Having seen many asshats on yaks and SUPs, I disagree that paddlers of non-motored rowboats, canoes, kayaks and SUPs are exempt from the requirement.
