Trump flies flag at full height before end of Carter mourning period

by Sarah Fortinsky - 01/13/25 2:25 PM ET

American flags at President-elect Trump’s private Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida were flying at full-staff Monday, The Associated Press reported.

The shift comes before the end of the 30-day mourning period intended to honor the late President Carter, who died Dec. 29 at the age of 100.

President Biden ordered flags nationally to half-staff through sunset on Jan. 28. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) issued a similar 30-day directive for his state.

The AP reported a large flag at Mar-a-Lago had initially been lowered to half-staff but has since been raised.

The Hill has reached out to Trump’s team for comment.

Trump has expressed frustration that flags would be set to half-staff during his inauguration, which falls within 30 days of Carter’s death.

“The Democrats are all ‘giddy’ about our magnificent American Flag potentially being at ‘half mast’ during my Inauguration,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Jan. 3. “They think it’s so great, and are so happy about it because, in actuality, they don’t love our Country, they only think about themselves.”

Gavin Newsom Hits Back at Elon Musk With Clip of Firefighters Exposing His ‘Lies’

WAR OF WORDS

Trump’s “First Buddy” had blamed a water shortage for the fires spreading, but a firefighter contradicted that claim in an awkward livestream.

Gavin Newsom has taken to X to share what he believes is a gotcha clip of Elon Musk being “exposed” for lying about the California wildfires.

The MAGA billionaire, along with Donald Trump, has been a vocal critic of the governor’s response to the crisis. Trump even dubbed him “Gavin Newscum,” before Musk described him as a “subtard.”
Newsom had sensibly refused to get drawn into the war of words, saying he “respect the office” of the incoming president. But, taking to X on Sunday evening, he tagged the company’s owner and said he had been “exposed by firefighters for his own lies.”

He added a clip of a livestream led by Musk in which the tech mogul speaks to a member of the L.A. fire command team inside the response HQ. It came as Musk was in the Los Angeles’ Pacific Palisades neighborhood to provide Cybertrucks fitted with SpaceX satellite internet terminals to ensure connectivity in the area.
But during the private briefing with the firefighter, Musk appeared to have designs on confirming his theories about water shortages. However, when the X chief quizzed the firefighter on whether the Palisades had run out of water, he didn’t get the answer he seemed to be looking for.

“Was water available? I understand that wasn’t an issue in Malibu, is that correct?” he asked. But the firefighter responded, “There was water, we have water reservoirs.”

“Just an example, if we have one building burning, we can flow 1,000 gallons a minute on that one building,” he went on. “The amount of water we’re flowing, there really is no water system that’s gonna keep that pace, so we have to bring in water tenders, which are these big water tanks, you know, 2,500- to 3,000-gallon trucks, and they’ll come in, and that’s what we have to do to compensate.”
The firefighter added: “DWP (Los Angeles Department of Water and Power) did a great job, they brought in big trucks for us and we used them as, basically, mobile hydrants.”

Musk, who had previously blamed “bad governance at the state and local level that resulted in a shortage of water,” then repeated his question. “Correct me if I’m wrong, but in Malibu there was no shortage of water, in the Palisades there was a shortage of water at a certain point, or is that not accurate?” he said.
“Well, we were flowing an amount of water that the system couldn’t… it was overbearing,” the firefighter responded.

Musk, looking forlorn, stopped the stream with a final unflattering low-angle shot of his disappointed-looking face. “OK. All right. Sounds good,” he said awkwardly.

The answer he got didn’t tally up with Musk’s campaign against the wildfire response. Musk has been parroting much of the criticism from Trump, who declared that Newsom “wanted to protect an essentially worthless fish called a smelt, by giving it less water (it didn’t work!)” and “he is the blame for this.”
Peter Gleick, co-founder of the Pacific Institute—a California research organization that focuses on water—rejected that criticism in a chat with The New York Times, noting that Southern California reservoir levels are above normal for this time of year. “There’s no water shortage,” he said. “The real issue is that urban water systems are not built or designed to fight massive, urban wildfires.”

Musk had also essentially blamed Newsom’s “woke politics” for the deadly blazes that have killed at least 24 people, after he reposted a comment by Natalie Danelishen—an administrative assistant at the Free Cities Foundation—who said the governor “could have fixed the fire issue 5 years ago. Now his state burns thanks to his woke politics.”

He also agreed with a since deleted post from conspiracy theorist Alex Jones that claimed the fires are part of a “larger globalist plot to wage economic warfare and deindustrialize” the U.S. before “triggering total collapse.” Musk did not immediately respond to a request for comment

Newsom accuses Musk of encouraging looting in LA fires disinformation spat

Billionaire reposted false claim as Republicans seek to condition disaster aid to Democratic-controlled California
Gavin Newsom has accused the tech billionaire Elon Musk of “encouraging looting” in an escalation of a row over disinformation surrounding the deadly Los Angeles fires.

The California governor lashed out after Musk, who is President-elect Donald Trump’s wealthiest supporter, reposted a message on X – the social media platform he owns – that falsely accused the governor and his fellow Democrats of decriminalising looting.

“Stop encouraging looting by lying and telling people it’s decriminalized. It’s not,” Newsom wrote. “It’s illegal – as it always has been.”

The clash came amid concerns of a looting spree after owners who had been forced to abandon their homes as the flames spread later returned to find the contents had been burgled.

About 30 people have been arrested, most of them for suspected looting, since the fires threatened to engulf several Los Angeles neighbourhoods. One man was found at a fire-damaged home dressed as a firefighter and arrested. Two men were detained on Saturday outside the Los Angeles home of Kamala Harris – the vice-president whom Trump defeated in November to return to the White House – but were later released after no evidence of a burglary was found.

Newsom’s exchange with Musk was triggered by a user who posted a television interview in which the governor said there would be “zero tolerance for looters”.

Above the footage, the user wrote: “LOOTING: Newsom and California Democrats literally decriminalized looting, barring police from arresting looters and prosecutors from prosecuting them. Now he’s opposed to looting.”

Musk, who has been prominent in Republican criticism of the Democrat response to the fires, reposted the message with a clown emoji and a globe.

Trump, Musk and other leading Republicans have blamed the fires on liberal and “woke” policies they accuse the Democrats of prioritising over public safety, including measures to combat climate change. They have focused on Kristin Crowley, Los Angeles’s first female fire chief – who is gay – to portray a fire service more focused on diversity, equity and inclusion policies.

The baseless accusation that Newsom had decriminalised looting appeared to stem from his opposition to changes to Proposition 47, a 2014 ballot initiative that reduced some minor offences from felonies to misdemeanours in an effort to free up prison space for more serious crimes.

The ballot’s provisions were partly replaced by another initiative, Proposition 36, in 2024 that introduced tougher sentences for offences such as shoplifting, property damage and theft in certain instances. Neither initiative explicitly mentioned looting.

Newsom opposed Proposition 36 and initially proposed competing legislation to keep it off the ballot.

The governor extended his complaint about disinformation to include Trump, who has claimed that firefighters’ efforts to extinguish the blaze were hampered by a shortage of water in local reservoirs. Water experts say levels in Los Angeles reservoirs were at record levels when the fires started.

“The reservoirs are completely full – state reservoirs here in southern California,” Newsom told NBC. “That mis[information] and disinformation, I don’t think, advantages or aids any of us.”

Trump has hinted that he might hold back disaster aid to California after he is sworn back into the White House on 20 January amid calls from Republicans that relief funds should come with “strings attached”.

The notion of using the fire to extract political concessions from California’s ruling Democrats seemed to be given voice by John Barrasso, a Republican US senator from Wyoming, who told CBS’s Face the Nation that the fires were a result of “gross mismanagement in California by elected officials”.

“There can’t be a blank check on this … because people want to make sure that as rebuilding occurs … that these sorts of things can’t happen again,” he said, mooting the idea of an aid package with “strings attached”.

“The policies of the liberal administration out there – I believe – have made these fires worse.”

The suggestion drew an angry response from Democrats.

“This is disgraceful. Disaster aid should never come with strings attached,” Maxwell Frost, a Democrat US House member from Florida, posted on social media.

Newsom said Trump had made similar threats following fires that happened in California during his first presidency.

“He did it to California back before I was even governor, in 2018, until he found out folks in Orange county voted for him, and then he decided to give the money,” he told NBC. “We take it seriously to the extent that, in the past, it’s taken a little bit more time [to get the funds].”

It's all the lesbian fire cheifs fault!! LMFAO

Meanwhile hearings ARE now underway to confirm yet another sexual predator to the cabinet as Sec. of Defense HEGSETH

On infidelity and sexual assault allegations

Hegseth faced allegations that he sexually assaulted a woman he met at a conference in California in 2017. He has denied it, saying it was consensual. No charges were filed.

He has acknowledged paying a settlement to his accuser, contending he did so to head off a baseless lawsuit. “The matter was fully investigated, and I was completely cleared,” he said.

He also has acknowledged multiple instances of infidelity, including the California incident, which happened while he was going through a divorce with his second wife after having a child with the woman who is now his current wife, Jennifer Rauchet.

He told Kelly that going to a hotel room with someone who was not his wife “is not OK” and that he paid the settlement “to protect my wife. I did it to protect my family. I did it to protect my job.”

He said it was fair to call him a “serial cheater” but he “truly was changed by Jen and my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” and is now a different man. lol!

Newsom's state is on fire and he has time to make public statements about Trump, blaming everyone besides himself. An absolute disgrace.
Yet there is no problem with a guy and his #1 flunky who should be busy transitioning to take over as POTUS taking cheap shots at a governor dealing with a disaster??? There son is the DISGRACE!!!!!!!! TOTAL!!!!!

Talking about Newsom. Nobody else. His state is on fire. All on him. Taxpayer money, both federal and state, wasted and squandered for years. $50M on lawfare to "Trump proof" the state. How about freeing that money up to help your constituents in their darkest hour?

Let's spend more time and money on preventing these atrocities. These children never had a chance.

Watching/listening to the Senate confirmation hearings.

Pretty sad observation.

Have noticed, Pete Hegseth being thanked for his military service, even by dems just waiting to release the venom.

Mazie Hirono from Hawaii did not. Disgusting.

Markwayne Mullin - WOW - Please pull the segment where he spoke during the Pete Hegseth confirmation hearings.

The absolute best comments I have ever heard from a Senator. A few more like him, and we might get this country back. Astounding.

Absolutely incredible.

Kevin O’Leary is doubling down on his calls for top California politicians Gavin Newsom and Karen Bass to resign from office on the heels of Speaker Johnson confirming "discussions" on tying wildfire aid to the debt limit.

"I think every taxpayer in America, including those in California, would like to tie this aid to removing Newsom and Bass. Now. Gone," O’Leary said on a "Varney & Co." panel Tuesday.

"Part of the deal would be, and I know Trump likes new ideas, here's one: not a dime until those two are whacked from their jobs immediately," he continued. "They are so incompetent, and all of the decisions they've made led to this, and they're still making mistakes. They're horrific managers. Whack them."

Well said.

I don't think the wealthy owners of those multi-million $$ homes will sit quietly when the smoke clears.
I see a future class action vs. state of CA for the complete lack of preparedness as a general across the board ineptitude.

No, no, no, no, no ...

Let them keep living in their idealistic fantasy world!

They'll continue to believe their own bull$#it and think they can succeed in an election where people who have to live in reality can vote.

The madness is a gift to freedom.

WHOOPS!!!

BREAKING: Donald Trump has a nuclear meltdown after Special Counsel Jack Smith's investigation report is released — revealing that the evidence was "sufficient to obtain and sustain a conviction" if the trial had gone to court.
This is a bombshell of historic proportions...
"The department’s view that the Constitution prohibits the continued indictment and prosecution of a president is categorical and does not turn on the gravity of the crimes charged, the strength of the government’s proof or the merits of the prosecution, which the office stands fully behind," Smith wrote.
"Indeed, but for Mr. Trump’s election and imminent return to the presidency, the office assessed that the admissible evidence was sufficient to obtain and sustain a conviction at trial," he went on.
The 137-page report was delivered by the Justice Department to Congress shortly after midnight on Tuesday and the contents are utterly damning.
The document tears into Trump for attempting to undermine and destroy our democracy by reversing the 2020 election and for repeatedly encouraging "violence against his perceived opponents" in the weeks leading up to January 6th.
Smith wrote that Trump was clearly to blame for the Capitol insurrection and pointed to the fact that numerous convicted rioters testified that they believed they were carrying out Trump's wishes.
The report was the result of an exhaustive investigation and included interviews with over 250 people as well as grand jury testimony from over 55 witnesses.
Smith strongly suggested prosecution in the report, citing Trump's "unprecedented criminal effort to overturn the legitimate results of the election in order to retain power."
Trump lashed out at Smith over the report in trademark fashion with a frantic Truth Social post—
"Deranged Jack Smith was unable to successfully prosecute the Political Opponent of his 'boss,' Crooked Joe Biden, so he ends up writing yet another 'Report' based on information that the Unselect Committee of Political Hacks and Thugs ILLEGALLY DESTROYED AND DELETED, because it showed how totally innocent I was, and how completely guilty Nancy Pelosi, and others, were," Trump wrote, lobbing some of his usual baseless lies.
"Jack is a lamebrain prosecutor who was unable to get his case tried before the Election, which I won in a landslide. THE VOTERS HAVE SPOKEN!!!" he added.
The truth is that Trump knows that he's guilty and that history will judge him accordingly. He may be in the White House for a few years, but he'll be a felon forever.
