2nd body of missing kayaker found

Some reports indicated they were wearing heavy winter clothes and no lifejackets. Windy and water in the 50°s. Suicide pact ? Did they own the kayaks ? I myself have never not worn a PFD and I now only kayak fish the back bay and not 100 yards from a dock. While some paddlers enjoy the colder months, not me !

Never ascribe to malice what can be explained by stupidity.

They probably just had no idea what the risks were.

Maybe the government can mandate a safety class and name it after them.

I'm kidding. There's no shortage of information available for them to learn about kayaking. All they had to do was look.

Politics notwithstanding, it really sucks that these guys were failed on so many levels. From whoever sold them the equipment and their own failure to educate themselves and everything in-between.

Steep price for ignorance. 🙁

Sounds like a highly intoxicated episode to me.

Found kayak in garage
Hey let's go kayaking
Went out in calm area
Ended up by bridge
Strong current
Started panicking
Kayak tips.............

I thought there was a new law (rule?) that Nov 1st, boats under 21 feet mandate the use of life jackets. I was concerned knowing how much clothing I wear in these cold months. I know there is no way I could swim with all the layers. I purchased a Type V PFD one piece full body life jacket. It is warm, but bulky. Out in a center console, there is not much protection when its cold.

There is:
Cold Weather Boaters: Anyone underway in a boat less than21 feet in length anytime between November 1 and May 1 must wear a securely fastened life jacket. This includes canoes, kayaks, rowboats andmotorboats Commercial vessels are exempt. .NYS Nav. Law Section 40.1(e).

Of course these two were stupid enough or high to go out in winter coats on a windy day in 50° water...

I know of several baymen who died through the years. While clamming, scalloping in winter, they slipped and fell overboard, hitting their heads, knocked unconscious and drowned. They would be living if they wore a life vest!

If you fish alone a life vest is a must regardless of time of the year.

I started kayaking in 2005. Kayak fishermen invariably wear one. It's the "plain" paddlers and often kids and their parents who might be seen without them.

Does anyone know if the type V PFD one piece full body life jacket meets the requirement?
