Tekota 500

Hey Pete

I noticed one of my Tekota 500’s was acting funky lately mainly on free spool when letting out line. Yesterday it completely failed and got stuck and needed pressure to move

Just opened it up on work bench and found the smaller plastic gear missing a couple of teeth. Pretty sure thats the culprit

Ya think anybody keeps that in stock or should I go right to Shimano??

Thanks
Mitch

Just went to my local B&T who told me good luck finding parts on Shimano products not made in last 5 years

Went to shimano.com and gears still available

Order placed
See what happens
I still have a pair of 500's I use regularly and have not had any problems getting parts form Shimano. You should be receiving your order soon.

I do know that Causeway B&T here in Wantagh has as really good inventory of Shimano parts. I generally go to them first, as I really dislike having to chasing down parts I need for my own reels, let alone those I work on for others.

However, I also like Ebay for odd-ball discontinued parts. It's come thru many times for my needs. Just have to be patient with Ebay, because its so random. But you never know, what you need could pop up the day you look for it.

Example - I have a MINT Curado 200D5 that's probably 20 years old that really needed a gear set change. Shimano hasn't had inventory of those gears for ages. A really rare gearset, for sure. Once a week I'd check Ebay for parts I need for mine and some other guy's reels. It took more than a year and a half of checking, but sure enough, a brand new set appeared and I instantly bought them. Not cheap at $55, but they allowed me to put a $200+ reel back in my fluke lineup, and so I was fine with paying the fare.

By the way, the 200D-series of Curados is well known to be the toughest version of the Curado family that Shimano ever produced. They were replaced with the E-series after only 3 or so years, as the D's were far too heavy for the liking of the FW bass crowd for whom they were intended, and so never caught on.

But what was bad for the picky FW guys is good for us. H/D reels are what we look for, and the Curado 200D5 is EXACTLY the size and weight of the current 300-size Curado and Tranx reels that Shimano offers today. See, Shimano was ahead of its time with that D series of reels, but completely missed the mark trying to sell them to the FW crowd. Someone in Shimano's marketing department didn't do their homework, I guess.

Now about your Tek500 - I would completely break that reel down to the last nut and bolt, going thru it looking for those missing teeth. They went someplace and so you really do need to find them before putting that reel back in service. I suspect that's why the reel locked up. If I had to guess - a plastic tooth is stuck between the main and pinion gears. Possibly mashed into a main gear tooth groove.

Great Advice!
Its on the side opposite the handle
On the parts diagram schematic its #533 and labeled as IDLE GEAR B Part Number
10NXF
Im thinking breaking down that side of the reel would suffice since it can’t make it to the other/handle side correct?

Yes, forgot that Shimano put it on that side. Tekotas and Abu round reels share that type of level wind drive system. My bad. Does the rotating assembly turn freely with the broken plastic gear removed?

Yes 👍
I pulled the spool out and took a peek and all looked good on that side so I put it back in and it spins very free and smooth “unlocked” and just as smooth when “locked” by turning the handle. I looked all around the open side and just like you suspected I found the broken pieces that came off the plastic gear. Using a tiny flat head screwdriver and tooth pick I scooped out all the grease to make sure no more pieces are hidden or sitting in any of it.
I’ll regrease everything when I get and install the new gear

I can’t help but think its a self inflicted issue from last winter’s maintenance when I took it apart and maybe didn’t line it up perfectly when putting it back together 🤷‍♂️

Make sure it is 100% for Saturday, Mitch. I intend to give you a chance to really put it to the test on some serious Tog!!
Well, unfortunately, I may need to be relying on one of the other reels in my arsenal on Saturday.
As they say, when life looks like easy street there is danger at the door 😳
I put the new gear on and played with it on the bench and all seemed great.
Added grease put the side plate and cover on and tightened the screws. Mounted it on a rod and tied an end on my trailer in the driveway to take it for a “test ride”. While in free spool and walking backwards letting out line it locked up. Instead of stopping right there I locked it and tried turning the handle and knew right away something went wrong

Back to the workbench I opened it up and see Pete was right and there was more damage than I originally hoped for. The mount for other larger idle gear, thats part of the entire plastic side cover broke and that gear was flopping around inside. Im guessing it cracked during the original incident and I didn’t notice it

Now I need a new side plate that according to shimano.com is currently not available.
I’ll try making some calls to Causeway and other places to try and track it down
