The Onancock Chronicles the Eastern shore

Let's not get into a pissing match here. The "Onancock Chronicles" were about waders exploits. That thread is Grandfathered here. If Larry wants to open the thread, its up to him. If not we can change the title of this thread to something that will not cause confusion.

Why don't I have a choice as to what I want the title of my thread to be ?

Like I said before, it will cause confusion. Although this is a new site we've carried many of the old threads here. Onancock Chronicles was a thread about waders exploits. It should still mean the same thing here, being that we are all from Noreast.

So I was tasked with retrieving the Brits son from the airport this evening........................

No big deal. Only issue coming back was on the CBBT. Due to high winds the speed limit was reduced to 35 MPH. Try going 35 MPH for 20+ miles.
It's not easy. Did feel the wind try to move the car toward the railing once or twice though.

So I get him back to where he will be staying. This is at the Financial Backers place. He has a 10 bedroom farmhouse on 50 acres. Lets "the Lads" stay there when he out of town at one of his other houses. He has several (Baltimore, Hawaii, British Columbia, Florida, etc.).

Really LONG winding driveway to get to the house. About a 1/4 of a mile easily. Not paved - dirt. Through a heavily forested area. Wind took down a good size branch about 40 feet behind me as I went in. Had to clear that on the way back out.

Not the real issue or reason for posting this.

Now where this home/farm is located there are nothing but winding, twisting, narrow roads with no lighting. Deer poppin' out everywhere. Drainage ditches on either side of the road. It's about 5 miles from the center of town but still in Onancock. It's pitch dark. Illuminated only by moonlight & my headlights which are on high with my fog lights joining in to help out. I know I've seen scenes like this in several horror movies.

Well - I took a wrong turn.
Easily done. As I've said - I've hardly ever been back there during the night. Nothing is lit up - l have almost never been back there after nightfall (like maybe twice?).

So's I make this here wrong turn.
About a 1/2 a mile in I know I'm going the wrong way & have no clue how to go about going the right way. Hemmed in by trees & ditches on both sides - can't make a U-Turn.

I know - turn on my GPS & punch the home button.
Easy- Peasy.

'Cept - it seems the GPS has no idea where I am either.

It tells me to continue on the path I'm headed in but the route shown on the GPS "seems" to come to an end further up the road I'm on (?).

Puzzled I continue on anyway. As I said I can't turn around. I'm also thinking "Well maybe there a momentary glitch with the satellite the GPS is working off of & the route will appear on the screen when I get closer to where the road "seems" to end on my screen. Otherwise - why would it send me this way?"
I mean - what choice did I have anyway?

So's on I go...................................

Road begins to go from asphalt to shells (yes they use them down here on "less traveled roads" & this sure looked like a "less traveled road" if I ever saw one). As a matter of fact it was probably the least traveled road I've ever been on.
:censored:

It then goes to dirt & I'm in a field.

I wasn't in this field alone.
There was a herd of deer with me. Had to be 20 of them. A real bonafide herd!!

They looked at me
I looked at them.
I then looked at my GPS.
It looked back.

It wasn't a glitch in the satellite.
The road ended here!

The GPS then decides it's going to take charge.

"Please make a U-Turn if possible."
Really?
Haven't you been reading?
Turning around is not really an option (bitch!).

So's I get out of the car.
Start walking around the car in a circle to make sure there is no mushy ground within 10 or 15 feet of the car.

The deer (remember them?) looked at me.
I looked at them.
All the time I kept an eye on them wondering if deer were in a big enough herd (& what size would the herd have to be) - would they/could they be inclined to take me out? Because they didn't seem to be bothered by my presence 20 or so feet away.

Ground felt solid enough to try & swing the car around.
Meanwhile my car door is open & I hear the GPS going "Recalculating the Route".

I wanted to go in the car & punch it's lights out (bitch!).

Got back in - swung the car around & bid adieu to the deer - they didn't respond in kind & headed back down the road. Had to remove another branch from the road to get by. Really blowing out there!

1/2 mile or so & I'm back at the intersection that sent me on my ill fated trip.
And the GPS?

It tries to send me back the way I just came!!!!!!

Ignoring it - I make a left hoping this is going to get me where I want to go. Ignoring the "if possible make a legal U-Turn" coming out of my GPS repeatedly I carry on.

Finally coming onto a road I recognize (after avoiding two more deer that came out onto the road) I know where the "F" I am.
(y)

I actually don't know how to end this but I'm getting tired of typing & there's a scotch waiting for me - so that's it.

FINI!!!!!!!!!

LOL good one Larry, Dom's right about not getting to excited about your very own little "Bit(h in a box". Many of the roads down the peninsulars don't even show up here. If i sent you to my boat from here about 5 miles of road don't show. Well that's not as bad as being down the island (Long) and trying to get to Alexandros with your gps. No go.

Even in places like Massachusetts. Coming up Rt.I 495 N to get on Rt.I 95 N to Maine Gps will show 16.5 miles to I 95 as you go by the sign that says 1 mile to I 95. The sign is right. They don't always work even in a Semi civilized State, no reason why they should be better down there. :)

That was Not her fault, That was the night of the Hurricane, I had shut her voice off and was concentrating on staying on the road. Well I got that done alright just did not /could not see the exit numbers. I would have realized it when i got to Montauk.

Sorry Larry from Onancock.
