After reef therapy, LI waterways feeling much better - Innovate Long Island

Citing DEC “monitoring surveys,” the governor’s office noted an increase in fishing activity since the Artificial Reef Initiative began last year – including a single-day combined vessel count of 369 boats at the program’s numerous reef sites, “nearly twice the prior daily high vessel count.”

It’s a parking lot out their now and most of the fish are throwbacks it’s not enjoyable anymore having to move the boat in the middle of a drift or yelling at another boat who is drifting when your anchored. Glad I got a few spots / coordinates that’s not published and shared with only a few. My favorite line when a boat comes over to us now is no were not fishing now were just anchored here having lunch and a drink.

I try to avoid the Shinny reef on weekends but sometimes its the only time I can get there. The worst culprit is a Dive Boat that insists on drifting through the fleet and the dude jumps and down and screams like a lunatic at anybody and everybody for getting too close to him. It's tough enough maneuvering around all the other boats fishing without worrying about divers in the water. Yes, i recognize that the divers have every right to be there and do their thing which i have no problem with. But at least anchor and raise your flag so i can give you your space and avoid you...

Trust me that got that idea on their own. They did the same thing on the West Coast. First, they seed it with reef material and then as soon as it blossoms they turn it into an MPA.

Trust me that got that idea on their own. They did the same thing on the West Coast. First, they seed it with reef material and then as soon as it blossoms they turn it into an MPA.

For those like me who rely on Alexa MPA stands for Marine Protected Areas. Here is a recent article, I don't agree with everything in the article but it's a good start for some education. You old timers throwing around abbreviations LOL ?
