Roach?

As a young teenager, I used to fish Argyle Lake in Babylon almost every week. We used to catch a fish we called "Roach" on dough by the bucket full. Does anyone else remember them or know what they actually were? They were gold all over, but were not Goldfish and were about 8" long.

Probably some type of carp/ Koi
 
No, they didn't look anything like carp or Koi, and my friend's family used to eat them. They looked like perch only all gold. I have never seen them anywhere else by Argyle Lake.

I still fish there and have never witnessed anyone catching anything like that. Hope someone else can chime in with the answer
 
preacherRon bingo,, mojoe remembers catching them in willowbrook pond on staten island all the time when i was a kid,,, those fish were kind of silver and body was like a skinning shad or something like that,, i know like you said they were long and skinning,, wow what happened to the roach fish,, your right with dough ball when i were fishing for carp and gold fish,,, i use to catch fat goldfish shape like football,,, wow preachRON you just me back in time ,, when it was all good as a kid,,, most kids dont know chit what we did as kids,,, have a good day,,, when i saw the roach i thought your home was full of them :LOL:,, just joking,,,,,,,,,,, preacherRON these were the roachfish am i right,,,,,,,,,><))):>

It is strange that they would just die off, especially when there were so many of them around.

??? but again i have not been around the staten island lakes and ponds just hanging out to see what the kids are catching ;) ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ><))):>

On this side of the atlantic they are called roach in great britan.They are popular in the Coarse fishing world .Where they acctually have tournaments on who can catch the most minnows in a ciirtain amount of time.
 
As a kid.......I remember roaches in Avon manor Pond in Amtyiville. I also remember setting out night lines and catching snapping turtles to 45 lbs. I would bet roaches are gone but those turtles ar likely still there. Way back then, some guy used to come around at night and gaff the turtles near the shore, shoot them in the head with a .22 and take them to sell. I had one turtle bite a broomstick handle in half on me once. They are so incredibly nasty. Turtles are also in Twin Ponds in Centerport
