Coronavirus

So far so good with respect to the grocery store employees we have encountered. With plenty of venison and even a few packages of frozen fish from last summer, our not being able to get chicken for two weeks at either ShopRite or Stop and Shop has not been a problem. Definitely will not be bothered with the extra mile going to a Stop and Shop again though. Courteous employees at both stores but S&S had a LOT of empty shelves. Before the nuttiness over the china virus began, better half and I during the first week of February hit BJ's for our usual every two or three months stock up so even though I experimented using Newsday's weather and obit pages in lieu of t.p., we still have quite a stash, paper towels included. Had some dust masks for when I do sanding , along with a box of gloves that I wear under my shoulder length gloves for dressing a deer, and I never saw the need for a gallon of hand sanitizer and still don't. (Do have a few of those little personal bottles.) Funny thing is, when the hoarding began, I kept thinking about filling all my gasoline containers that I usually use in the fall to top off the boat but decided to hesitate. We have used about five gallons of gas since early March in both car and truck, lol. We have also got take-out from our favorite chinese and fried chicken place, once each, and twice from our favorite Italian restaurant as well. Being retired, with two federal pensions, except for not being able to go shooting or see friends in person, this whole thing has just not impacted us much although better half and I have gotten "testy" once or twice. Now in a month when I want to start warm weather kayak fishing again, there BETTER BE ACCESS !!

pretty much in the same boat - however ll that stuff I normally buy - that I purchased before all this started is beginning to run a little dry - so I'm hunting for it every couple of days (mostly without success) just to supplement what I had - don't know how long this is going to go on before either people stop hoarding or the supply chains are able to keep up with the hording

With the exception of hand sanitizer and Lysol spray, the local Mom & Pop is lock and loaded. Never any meat shortages, always plenty of beef, chicken and pork and today, the paper goods aisle is spilling over into the aisle.

Went to Costco today. Less chaos then I expected. Line to get in was orderly and went quickly. Once inside everything was stocked well. Limit of one per person on eggs, milk, and cases of water. Only a small amount of bounty paper towels and some name brand TP. I still have a full case left so no need to purchase. Meat section was fully stocked although they were low on most chicken products. Checkout was extremely organized. Two big lines fed into the registers. Must say I was impressed.

Cases of Water

That one has me stumped. I've seen the people that seem to be trying to hoard water.
I'm not sure why?

If you have Public/City Water that shouldn't stop coming out of your faucet because of the virus unless I'm missing something.
If you pull your water from well - do they expect it to run dry somehow because of the virus?

I just don't get it.

De Blasio Draws Scorn With Plan for July 4 Fireworks: Live Updates

The mayor proposed that the annual Macy’s fireworks display go on, prompting some New Yorkers to accuse him of misplacing priorities.

The mayor’s fireworks announcement is greeted with … fireworks.
The fireworks show must go on.

So said Mayor Bill de Blasio on Twitter on Wednesday, posting a video message in which he promised that the annual Macy’s Fourth of July pyrotechnic display would light up the sky despite the city’s current shutdown and gloomy prospects for the summer.

“One thing we know for sure,” Mr. de Blasio said. “We will find a way to put on a show that will show how much we love our country.”

He elaborated at his morning briefing.

“This is a day we cannot miss, this is a celebration that has to happen,” he said. “Come hell or high water we are going to do this.”

One way or another, the show will go on. One way or another, we’re going to celebrate the Fourth of July in a very special way in New York City. There’s definitely going to be fireworks — how we do them, where we do them, how we do it in a way that’s safe and keeps New Yorkers healthy — a lot of questions that we have to answer between now and then.

The response on Twitter was swift and furious. Some people apparently felt the festive promise showed misplaced priorities.

“How about u stop worrying about Celebrations and fix this city,” one user asked.

“How about Macy’s just gives all that money to supermarket, delivery and healthcare workers?” asked another. “I promise you New Yorkers are more worried about their own health, the health of others, and ensuring that their favorite small businesses are able to survive, rather than a stupid fireworks show.”

Others noted that Macy’s had furloughed most of its 125,000 U.S. employees last month.

Although the company does not publicly disclose its costs for the fireworks display, which last year involved setting off 70,000 pyrotechnics from barges along the East River, the price tag has been estimated at around $6 million in fireworks alone, according to the website Bankrate.com.

The event has required the presence of 6,000 police officers in previous years, according to the city.

Asked if a fireworks display was worth the price, Mr. de Blasio said the celebration of what he called a “sacred” day was “part of our effort to fight back to recognize a day of this importance.” In the “grand scheme of things,” he said, the cost was small.

Considering that the city has already canceled popular outdoor events like the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and the Pride Parade, which had been scheduled for June 27, in line with a ban on large gatherings meant to slow the virus’s spread, Mr. de Blasio did not specify what exactly a safe, socially distant Independence Day celebration would look like.

Yeah I know. I drink at least a gallon a day. That’s a lot of bottles.

I like pequa’s use of the term asshat so I’m gonna start using it??

I’m thinking the asshats in Georgia and other states protesting that their rights are being taken away and want to restart the economy should take it full fledge and help New York that has taken the brunt of this??

Move all Wall Street operations to Atlanta. Have the state of Georgia and the city of Atlanta foot the bill for security and all other costs of a shit load of people overtaking their city. Have them foot the bill for everything else that comes with being the center of the universe and all the people that flock to it??

Freedom comes at a cost. I will gladly defer my NY tax bill That is needed to provide all that to those states that want to do whatever they want. Go for it asshats of the country. I got no problem with letting you all deal with what NY has to to be the center of the world

Take over. PLEASE. Give us a much needed break from all that responsibility?

See how quickly the rest of the asshat people of your states get Infected like we did

One could almost liken that to an upstate vs. downstate thing. The upstaters always claim that the welfare types in the Big Apple suck the state dry, but in fact its the other way around, by a long shot. Without the tax money coming in from Lawnguyland and the Big Apple, upstate would be just an extension of Appalachia. The manufacturing base upstate has long fled NY. NY as a state gives much more to the country financially as compared to what it gets back. Just another plus to being in this wonderful place, lol.

My esteemed Mayor, Comrade DeBlasio is a total fool. I’m embarrassed for my City.
