Shimano Grappler series rods..

Flukinit

Angler
Look like these rods came out late last year. With the shut down of some of the bigger shows and shops closed I have not gotten a 1st hand look at these rods.
Looks like they have 35 models in all with main series the Type J for jigging. They also have a casting series and different jigging blanks. Looks from online look like a real nice blanks with Shimano big sell appears to be the technology in this blank called Spiral X and Hi Powered X. Anyone on here have any 1st hand experience with these blanks or know what this x wrap technology does? Thanks.

Hmmmm
They look pretty interesting for sure.
Would love to hear some 1st hand feedback from anybody that used them as well.
I'm not in the market for anything right now but still interested in hearing about new stuff

The slight issue is that as of now pretty much no one has seen these, at least from an end-user's perspective, because they were intro'ed very late last year. So its doubtful that anyone up in the NE has fished it. The spec's look really fine, though. I suppose that Shimano is positioning this new series between the Trevala S rods and their high-end Game Type J true jigging rods. The Type J's are really special rods, and if some of their magic has migrated down-market to the Grapplers, they might just have a winner. Not that there's a thing in the world wrong with the Trevala S sticks. They are also very, very nice pieces in their own right.

I would get a Grappler and test it, except I already have a ton of similar rods for fluke and the like. Plus, there is a limit to even my "Tackle Ho" budget these days. Being a commissioned-based salesman that's not made any sales for months, tends to put a crimp in one's budget. Based on all the B/S going on, I consider myself fortunate that I can even get the boat floating this season.

So hopefully someone else that has a need for such a rod steps up and gives us some insight into this new series.

It Shimano's selling point for these rods is acid wrapped..I would think they are low quality blanks..X wrapped carbon ? sounds like a spin on helix blanks...this first showed up several years ago by a china blank mfg...If you remember cousins rods & blanks,,he pitched it to me several years back ..

and if i'm seeing it reading it correct putting it on the outside of the blank is pretty useless & a marketing trick....just go on the CTS site & read up on the way they build their blanks

Richie - I don't think any Shimano rods are spiral (acid) wrapped. Not that I can recall, anyways. CTS rods are much different than what Shimano is offering here. If you get a chance take a look at their Expride and other fairly high end rods. Similar technology to what is being offered here. Really good stuff. Very, very well thought of, no matter where you look.

Are you floating?

Rich, from the articles and videos I saw didnt see any spiral wrap. From what i read on a few sites they have the type J for jigging as the main line. Then built a casting as well as slow jig and on other. As Pete said came out late last year and with the Covid shut down not many people have seen them.
I was wondering if they were around had a page article in the Fisherman and saw several write ups about them. Figured this would be a good suit to discuss.

Yes have two floating one working..Albemarle needed a new port starter....Going to take the sea hunt for a spin on saturday..

mako land locked & for sale...know anyone the wants it ? lol..

That "new technology" was pitched to me several years ago by the owner of cousins rods...I didnt buy it...see where they are now belly up...shitmano may have bought it from him..or since hes gone just copied it...

I think you might have that backwards. Shimano has been making “outer spiral taped” rods for many years. In this country the Trevala S rods were the first we got to see, more than 10 years ago. But in Asia that tech goes back a very looong time.

Now the Chinese have copied it (big surprise) - a quick look-see on AliExpress reveals a ton of Chinesium slow-pitch rods that have that type of blank construction.

Some, like the Ecooda Black Expert and Kuying Bluedancer rods are very nice pieces - and have an enormous following in Australia and SE Asia. Haven’t read a single bad review of either - and I read a TON of fishing sites and blogs.

So what I’m saying is, I wouldn’t automatically dismiss this tech. It been proven on some very tough fish.

no more china ..moving up in the world..I dont fish anything made by them...had more of their reels blow up in my hands ..from tuna to fluke ..was watching the tuna show the other day...and a tariga blew up .LOL

I agree. No more China. Time to sanction their deceitful, miserable asses for what they’ve caused. I hope our Gov’t tallies up what this has cost and we negate their claim on our debt, for AT LEAST that amount. What value we place on the lost American lives, I dunno, but it better be substantial.

However, its not realistic to kill our debt while we have billions invested in Chinese “joint-venture” manufacturing plants. First we have to get that all back home, like the Japanese gov’t is now in the process of doing. Once we get as much back home as possible, then its time to drop the boom.

Such an action will pretty much force/incentivize the CCP To seize/nationalize whatever American assets are still there, plus the money markets would have a conniption. So, its a lot more difficult to do than my simplistic musings.

Eh, probably never happen. But it should.

BTW, Shimano’s Tiagra big game reels are made in Japan. If one of those blew up, I’d look hard at the maintenance records, or some other user-type error. There is no reel on Earth better reviewed than the Tiagra line up. If I hit the lottery, those are what I’d put on my brand-new 50’ Viking. I would probably have a conversation with you about the matching rods though. ?

Yup hit the nail on the head no more china as we type on our made in china computers & phones...instead of giving a trillion dollar tax break..use the money to MFG the stuff we use everyday here in the USA!!!!

watching the news right now talking about another three trillion bailout bill...instead on spending trillions on the middle east that we can never fix without nukes...spend the money here in the USA..so we can be together inside ..why not put people to work building roads & bridges ..give the bailout to the people willing to work for it first...

Couldn’t agree more. (y)

And let’s bring our Sons and Daughters home. 18 years is long enough to learn that area will never ever change. Let them kill each other. Enough Americans have given their lives - for almost nothing.

The Saudis wanna buy our planes and tanks? Fine by me. Let some of that oil money we spend with them come back. And maybe we should be reimbursed for putting a fleet out there to keep the oil flowing.

I wonder what the daily fuel burn of entire American battle group is these days? Send them the bill, or let them keep the peace out there themselves.

They can afford it. Just gotta cut back on their gold-plated Bentley purchases.

funny no haha how the same people who support the middle east mess now support trump ..He was a dem at the time & did speak out against it at the time...also find it funny how easy it is to sway people do to party lines..

so here we are with half the country closed & no one really knows what covid 19 is going to do ...maybe kill millions maybe not ,,no one really knows...so the question is are you willing to give your life or the life of your loved ones to find out..or go slow & maybe lose your job, house ? but just maybe keep the grandkids safe ?

We got a bunch of the Grappler rods in. Sold a few already for the Jig and Pop crowd. They have some nice actions that would make nice deep water fluke sticks.

I have to check pretty sure Grappler and Type J - JDM rods. (Japan Made)

I picked up the Shimano Grappler Series J last fall for blackfish spinning jigs. From 15 feet to 100 feet deep this rod has sensitivity to feel baby bergalls and the backbone to cross the eyes on a DD tog and get him outta the rocks or wreck. This rod is recommended. (y) (y)

Very nice John thanks for the feedback. What model did you get? I know they make several. Thanks
