Coronavirus

Ok let me get this in while this thread still is up .Wearing a mask has nothing to do with your Rites ,Rites this Rites that bla bla bla, it has to do with giving a damb about your fellow man and your family and their families. You have a choice to wear one or not. Not a God given Rite at least not in my eyes. And if you choose to blindly follow a Fool who refuses to wear one you desrerve to be led to where ever that Fool may lead you.

Really Sad. The most developed nation on the Planet & we're not getting this under control.

(Reuters) - New U.S. COVID-19 cases rose by nearly 50,000 on Wednesday, according to a Reuters tally, marking the biggest one-day spike since the start of the pandemic.

The record follows a warning by the government's top infectious diseases expert that the number could soon double to 100,000 cases a day if Americans do not come together to take steps necessary to halt the virus' resurgent spread, such as wearing masks when unable to practice social distancing.

In the first week of June, the United States added about 22,000 new coronavirus cases each day. But as the month progressed, hotspots began to emerge across the Sun Belt. In the last seven days of June, daily new infections almost doubled to 42,000 nationally.

Brazil is the only other country to report more than 50,000 new cases in one day. The United States reported at least 49,286 cases on Tuesday.

The rise in cases is not just the result of more testing. Hospitalizations are also skyrocketing.

It’s not really all that surprising.

Travel throughout the US effectively did not stop. Each state reacted differently with the exception of a few that actually worked together. Not to mentioned these nationwide protests where obviously no social distancing was practiced. Thousands of people in close quarters with little to no protection.

Also, it is undeniable that more testing = more cases. This is a pure numbers play.

I’m not at all surprised and in fact I am not surprised if we actually have more cases moving forward. I think once we get through flu season we may see a dip in the numbers.

I noticed you failed to mention that basically all of the states where it is increasing did not have mask mandates. They also thought it was not as serious as it really is and opened up bars and restaurants. The cases are much different in those places. Where NY most were older now they are under 40 or so

On our way to herd immunity.....Maine stands out a bit

I just got back from kayak fishing. It is about my 16th trip or so this season. All the boats that go by that are not just husband and wife have three and more people, no masks, and sitting or standing on top of one another. The only time I see any sense of responsibility is at the grocery store, HD, the pharmacy and picking up takeout and if you were allowed in without a mask I can only imagine how many more dead...

Herd immunity needs at least 60% infected and recovered, we're miles away from that, and most immunologists would rather see > 75%...

Maine rise is actually an artifact of increased testing; we've really ramped it up here. If you look at our "Positivity Rate" the percent of folks tested that are positive, it's been 3% or below for the last couple of weeks. That's very low. Someplace today at a 20+% positivity rate, I just can't remember, but when I saw that on the news, it was an immediate 'Holy CRAP!!" We really need to look at the testing data as the Positivity Rate, along with the hospitalization numbers. Those have started to skyrocket too.

How do we know we're miles away from that? AFAIK there is a percentage of asymptomatic cases and those whose symptoms are so mild they don't know they had it. Right now I don't believe they have any idea what those numbers actually are.

They've been running stats with the Antibody Tests that are run at reference labs, which have to report results to state CDCs. Once again, these are estimations because it's not population-wide. I am in agreement that the number of cases is probably grossly understated. Even so, we're far, far away from herd immunity.

Let's do some quick math here. The Population of NY State is 19.45 million, let's call it 20 million. The number of diagnosed COVID-19 cases reported by the NYS CDC as of June 30 was 212, 774, which let's call 200K, so that's only 1% of the population. Even if the number of diagnosed cases is off by 50x, which would mean 2 million folks have been infected and recovered, that's only 10% of the population, nowhere close to herd immunity.

Bottom line, with a population of 20 million people, 16 million NYers would have to had and recovered a Coronavirus infection to reach that 60% number. Don't forget that many in the business, aren't comfortable with that 60% number as it is very low. The USDA doesn't declare a dairy herd under "Herd Immunity" until over 95% of the herd has either been vaccinated or has antibodies for the disease.

Saw this on line yesterday, & in today's Newsday. College students in Tuscaloose Alabama have been having Covid-19 parties. They pay a fee to attend & also invite persons who are known to be infected, they attend for free. After the party the first student to have a positive test wins the money. Don't judge them to harshly, after all they are the future leaders of this Counrty.
