Generators

got a little 3500 just before Irene. Never lost my power, loaned it out. Readied it for Sandy. Didn't lose my power, loaned it out again. Will be in Europe during much of next two weeks. No idea if my son will figure it out and save my fish and venison...ya just know I will be without electric while away !

Still need to get mine hooked up the house
I did that a couple of years ago and its awesome. I plug a cord from the generator to a dryer sized outlet thingy in the garage which is tapped into the panel in the basement. I flip the transfer switch in panel to avoid electrocuting the line workers outside when its running. Its great for a few lights, fridge and freezer and hot water/heat or blower on wood stove if its winter (y)(y)

Mine is 12.5 KW and does run the A/C, but wouldn't have that and the electric dryer and/or oven running at the same time...

.... turned mine off finally at 8:30 last nite.
Still no cable or wifi internet. Phone works late at nite and early morning..... then bogs down.

you guys really got hit - I figured I'd be the one - didn't even lose power for more then a couple of hours

I forgot some important info. The MOST critical 220 V device I own is my well water pump!! There has never been a problem with my generator running that critical part of the house. We also have a 220 V constant pressure pump to keep the house water pressure up. This could be shut down if I needed to keep the load down on the generator and we'd still have total water usage, just not blow the dead skin off you pressure in the shower.

At this point I've never had to shut down the constant pressure pump while on the generator. AAMOF I've never even thought about it until now.

All in all, if we needed to be "Electrical Load Aware" the 220 V things we'd consider shutting down or using sparingly in order of least importance would be:

Heat Pump Heat/AC Combo Unit in bonus room (room also has baseboard heat)
Clothes Dryer
Oven
Constant Pressure Pump
A/C

loud, loud, loud ! Glad to have it, even happier when I shut it down Friday nite.

How many kW are yours rated at? Anyone power their central air along with lights and fidge?
Mine is a 5500
It will not run central AC, dryer, or more than 2 burners on the electric stove.
Especially not at same time.
I suppose it could run a window AC but never tried....
