Out with a friend today. Ran S & E of VZ today before Dawn to see what we coud jig. Blues @ 2 lbs were around for about an hour. When that died down, we ran S & E of Sandy Hook Reef. A few miles offshore, we found birds over breaking fish. Jigged up 20-30 --- 5-7 lb blues in @ 3 hours on 15lb...
Ran S & E of the VZ this morning looking for fish to jig. It felt like we were back in the heat wave of Juiy/August before Sun rose. Found some birds with fishing busting underneath at Dawn. Threw small jigs & poppers for 2-4lb blues and a few baby Bonito. Action slowed as the Sun rose higher so...
I was wondering where the bigger blues were hangin'? The NY Bight has only had fish @ 14-16" for several weeks.
Now the bass insanity in Raritan Bay is wide-spread. Hundreds of boats chasing stripers up to 50"++. My nephew got his PB 44" girl last Friday 10/21 with popper on a 20lb spinner...
Can't agree more.
Thursday NWS called for W @ 10-12 with 1-2' seas. Beautiful !!
At 6:00AM it was NW @ 15+ with 2-3' seas. The trip S was sloppy for us but do-able.
Long story short, our return was horrible. NW 25mph with 3-4' seas running right into it from Sandy Hook to the Narrows. Sloppy...
As I stated before, we were with them for @ 45 min and the water was never deeper than about 30 feet. Approximately 150+/- yards off a short jetty. There were 2 for sure. One looked full grown and the other was about half that size. Slurping up bunker the whole time.
I read 10-12 feet of bait on...
Ran down the beach to Sea Bright yesterday looking for albies, bonito and/or Spanish macks. Ended up jigging some small blues but dolphins moved in every time we got under working birds. They ended action each time.
Best part of the day was the Humpback whale show. We watched them for @ 45 min...
Way to go!
I had a similar experience in NY Harbor a couple of years ago. I reeled up a 8" squid that was holding on to my fluke bait. Before it dropped back into the water, I swung it into the boat. It let go right after that and dropped on the deck. I immediately put it on my plain hook rig...
Took my brother out yesterday at 515am, hoping for a repeat of Monday's action. Ran to the Rockaway Jetty for a "look-see" and found some blues under birds. We caught a half dozen and then they disappeared. I should note that the NWS blew the forecast AGAIN. West wind at 5-10mph was more like...
Late start (8:00am) with Nehews on Monday. Ran S of VZ expecting to run around a lot. Nice surprise to find cocktail blues under birds with nobody else around. Small jigs were the ticket at first but we switched to small poppers. Using a new Patchinko lure from "A Band of Anglers", we couldn't...
Dolphins can really put a stop to action. They'll scatter the bait and kill the bite.
A few years ago, my buddy and I were catch small Jacks off Fort Myers. The dolphins actually took the jacks right off our hooks.
Crazy, but pretty cool.
