I believe that is the gas tank. The construction and the straps all look like typical gas tank. I think what you're interpreting as a gas tank is the trunk floor.

Yeah, Avenger noted that. The giveaway are the straps, there are none on the trunk dropdown.

Also, the location of the fuel fill right under the sail panel indicates the gas tank is in front of the trunk, behind the rear seat.

Hey George, a good friend of mine back in the day also had a 69’ Chevelle. His was a sleeper…… it was dingy yellow, black vinyl top, front bench seat, automatic on the column, with an L88 under the hood. It was a screamer!!!
