I managed to hit on a few as bycatch in the bay last year. The one thing I'd note is that they were really early. I managed to bag a few shorts as bycatch near some fast moving water when working a bucktail for bass.
Great stuff! I picked up a couple of the squid teasers from him at the last Ward Melville fishing show, and they're in my category of 'too nice to fish'. Illogical I know, but any time I'm out there and about to tie it on, I think 'is the bite really good enough to warrant using this now?'.
This is good news, as previously the forecast covered everything east of Port Jeff as one mass of water, when anyone who boats out east near the point knows how drastically the wind can change by Plum Island, even on calm days. Per the NWS:
The new zone, ANZ332 shown below:
I've done this with MarineTex, but I used a drill bit one size larger to drill it out a bit first to give it a clean piece of glass/epoxy to grab on to, and then screwed in the screw before fully hardened. Granted it wasn't a very heavy load bearing application (my battery switch), but it is on...
I lost an entire pack of hot pink 4" grubs to sea robins right off Bug Light last year, so if there are birds that haven't developed a taste for Gulp I have yet to make their acquaintance.
Plenty of people bitched when 4 strokes started coming out. How did that turn out? Most of the resistance was the result of being forced to make engines more efficient and with less emissions. And in the end, the four stroke was just a better engine.
Granted, 4 stroke combustion engines were...
If I expected to have more spare time while I was up there (in daylight at least) I'd definitely grab a guide for a day, but the way it's looking I'm going to have a few hours at best. Considering the freshwater license requirement it might not even be worth my while, seeing as I won't likely...
To some extent it's almost embarrassing, I know zero about freshwater fishing. I can identify some saltwater fish in waters I've never even been to before, but right here in walking distance from my home there are fish I wouldn't be able to pick out of a lineup.
A guide probably isn't the...
Hehe, my first thought was 'Wineries? We have plenty of those down here, why would I do that?', then I remembered I was asking for fishing recommendations :) . Maybe I should check out the wineries too.
I'm going to be up in Ithaca second week of April. I am 99.9% a saltwater guy, save for a few casts out by Belmont lake and the swamp in Prospect Park. I'm going to have some free time up there, and I hear there are quite a few small lakes and tributaries that have decent freshwater fishing...
With all due respect to Skinner, who has forgotten more about fishing than I'll ever know - I've learned to take his YouTube videos lately with a grain of salt. They've reached the point where they're almost all product placement - I keep waiting for him to break out a Big Mac and declare 'you...
I don't know what some of those guys are thinking. Last summer I saw a group of kayakers go right through the gut. I couldn't believe my eyes, did a double take at first because they were a bit far away and I figured maybe someone was running with a smaller Zodiac, but no, it was 3 SOT kayaks...
Thanks Roccus, all great points. I know the utility is severely limited - from fishing off the kayak, there are a lot of things I can't do that I normally would on the boat, and I have had the misfortune of hooking in to a gator blue and trying to gracefully discharge it without too much...
I have a boat, but I find myself fishing alone more often as my kids get older and lose their patience (for the boat or the old man, that's up for debate). I started kicking around the idea of a GPS anchor (my biggest solo complaint is anchoring when I'm alone with no windlass), but adding a...
Very well! I like that policy :-)
Here's the link - I'll preface with 'didn't buy it here, and think you can get it cheaper elsewhere' along with the caveat to support your local B&T so they'll stick around:

I was boarded last year. I saw DEC on the water this year, but they didn't stop me.
They are definitely understaffed, which is hurting their conservation effort. But you do see news articles about people caught and fines being issued, so the threat is there for those folks even if it's not a...
Not sure what the position here is on commercial links, so I'll stick to the description...
I did really well with Savage Gear Erratic Fall Squish Jigs this year out on the East End. They're half-bluefish/half-squid like jigs that when the sea bass were hitting bait I switched over to in order...
I'll take the unpopular position here. No, I'm not a fan of all the regulations they're trying to push, but I do think that we need someone taking on this role and that not all of what they're suggesting is unreasonable or not matched by science.
The fisheries are under pressure like no time...
Thanks Chunkster! I have to dust off the sabiki rigs and give it a shot. Last time I was out for a drive I figured I'd take a few casts just for kicks, and came back with a few miniature black sea bass. I probably need to look for some visual signs of herring before I have a go at it.
