It's Time for a new fluke setup.

Only the Japanese would come up with entire rod and reel line-ups solely dedicated to squid fishing. For those that don't know, "egging" is Asian-style squid fishing. Some of these rod/reel setups run in the $1500+ range. They even have rods that are specifically designed for young (smaller, I...

    That's why I have this "job." 😛

Just to keep it clean, Mike what you have is a Stradic Ci4+, which was the precursor to its grandchild, the current Vanford A. I have the precursor to your reel, the original Stradic Ci4 - Shimano's "OG" carbon-framed reel. I guess that makes it the great-grandfather :p. All were part of...

It's Time for a new fluke setup.

EDIT to my above post - just remembered that one other advantage of the Spheos 3000SW over pretty much all other Shimnao spinners is that not only is it a 5:1 reel, but it uses the old-school HEG gears, not the delicate "MicroModule II" micro-toothed versions. HEG was bullet-proof. MM II? Not so...

Do we REALLY need a small spinning reel with huge factory drag ratings?

I think not. Watch this vid - I find it interesting.

Can I recommend the new Tsunami Evict II over the new Clash III? I have both (granted, both are one generation back) and like the Evict better. Both of them are pretty HD reels, that can easily double up at tog reels (that's what I use mine for), but at the expense of heavier weight. If this is...

Found Some New Fluke Hooks To Try Out

I finished up doing all my own reel maintenance many weeks ago, built a pair (or trio maybe?) of new Abu Mini-Toggers for next season's adventures, all the parts sourced right out of my own Abu parts inventory, and completed servicing all the reels that I took in from my regulars, other than...

    Lep's Flea Market

Hardkorre is a solid guy. I prep his reels every pre-season, and trust me, he owns some really top shelf rods and reels. One of which used to be mine!

Post up up your 2019/2020/2021/2022 Blackfishing Pix/Reports/Adventures/Musings

I’m a big believer that “tall fences make for good neighbors.” Sounds like you are as well.

Yep, I've written on this before - maybe to address this question that was (I think it was you - but maybe not) already asked in the past. Anyways, here goes. I have one neighbor, directly across the street from my side yard who some years ago tried to enlist a few of the other neighbors to...

This has been a cold winter so far

Yes, I’ve alway heard that as well. Going on 50 years, now that I think about it. Is it true? Maybe.

The toughest / easiest fish to catch

Toughest in my area? DD Fluke. Only one (11.2lbs in 2006) in 55 years of fishing. DD Tog MUCH easier (until recently). MY DD came on a dead sticked tandem-hooked whole squid, btw. Easiest? BSB, but as hartattack wrote, NY keepers another story.

    Okuma Hakai

NICE Reel! Wonder where you heard about it? ;) If you can, break it down and give it a full preventative lubing. Both Daiwa and Shimano reels not made in Japan ship with very little factory lubrication. At the very least, remove the right side plate screws and hit them with some reel grease...

Another Braid-to-Leader Knot that's pretty straightforward

The problem is that the Alberto and the various derivatives thereof will not smoothly enter small guides and especially smaller-ringed tiptops w/o the possibility of hanging up. This goes double for micro-guide equipped rods, like my Daiwa Proteus SS H. My favorite inshore tog rod, but what a...

Yep. I fish the very worst deep stuff I can find - the lost rigs are just the price of doing business in that neighborhood. Nothing like hitting the grounds at 0700, looking at your watch that now reads 1030, having lost 5 rigs in a row, and there's nothing to take home in the box. Really puts...

    Gulp! Sale

Meh, I don't worry so much about that, because I find that I lose nearly as many GULP! baits to snagged rigs as I do to tail bite-offs. Sux for sure, but fishing where I fish, I don't expect much longevity from any bait, or rig for that matter. What I truly hate is having a slow-catch trip and...

Pequa - give the 4" Grubs a try over the swimming mullets. They have a tougher tail that doesn't get torn off as easily.

Just got my Walmart order 6 & 5" versions. Don't know why the 5" bottles are cloudy. Maybe the cold in the FedEx truck. Meh, for the money I don't really care. For those that will ask, there's 10 pcs per bottle, plus at least $3-$4 worth of the juice as well. Good deal at what amounts to less...
