IIRC you have to do a first time passport application the old school way, whatever that is these days. If your expired passport is not expired over 1 year, it's fine for the online system, but please, don't depend on my memory. Two things, having a good backup program, I use Acronis True Image, and a large, dedicated hard drive, in addition to your normal working hard drive, to save the backups.
