Labor Day Offshore Fluke
Whelp, I can't speak to the inshore conditions, but Capt. Mike, Stephen and I got our behinds handed to us offshore yesterday morning. Not bad running out, but once we got off around 4 miles and lost the N breeze lee, man it was nasty. A totally blown forecast, (10mph...
Fluke and mussels poached in a homemade clam broth and white wine sauce. With a can of minced clams, garlic, onions, basil, Pepe rosso, and one plum tomato over Bucatini.
Fluke fillet sautéed in EVOO and butter with tyme, over wilted spinach and cherry tomatoes, lemon zest & juice, salt & pepper,, side is steamed and garlic-sautéed broccolini. With Egyptian-style cured olives from a gal friend who makes them just for us.
Sailed with Capt. Mike and Stephen yesterday, right to my office. Sporty on the way out, but once there it was surprisingly nice. Had fish coming early, including a pair of 5.5lb units for the box. A real good start. Then the endless shorties parade started, with at least 4 measuring a true 19"...
Fished deep today with Stephen and Capt. Mike. Ever hear the phrase "too nice?" Well, that was yesterday. Had them coming early, with Mike putting one in the box, among the big-ass shorts we are forced to throw back. Then we lost the drift, despite being right on the Moon. Funny how that works...
Matt - all the above chatter will have you over thinking this whole thing, potentially throwing you off your game. Fishing has no hard and fast rules, there is room for all kinds of fish-hooking styles. The way I hook fish is certainly not the only way, it's just my way. Same goes for Mike -...
Matt, I don't quite understand what you mean by rapid jigging not being possible with the Waki. I do it all the time with my Waki #2, in fact its actually easier on my old wrist with the shorter rod length.
As far as swinging hard on a fluke bite, I never do that - unlike a certain Captain we...
That looks to be a very cool little stick. I've always like the Dark Matter "Skinner" fluke rods and think their slightly slower taper is ideal for minimizing hook pulls on those larger head-shaking fluke. And they do handle the heavier jig and sinker weights that we commonly use offshore...
FINALLY!
Well, it only took a month and a half, but today Mike and I had a great day fishing my offshore drops. So freakin' rough early, once we lost the lee heading out, I really had some doubts about being able to hang in there. But the forecast called for it to lay down on the turn, and for...
So it turns out a very good friend of mine has donated a Poly-Planar AM/FM that he took out of his boat some years ago, to upgrade to a fancy Fusion head unit. Its too damn hot right now to do the install - soldering/shrink-wrapping a bunch of tiny wires in a tough location while laying on my...
I fished next to two very well know head boats yesterday. Heard almost zero calls for the net, and saw maybe five times (combined) the nets went into the water - for what looked (to me) to be short fish. This went on for better than four hours. And this was with one of them, a so-called "super...
Fished today - Monday
Lost my crew for today - broken car and sore back, so sailed solo. Decided to stay inshore for a change, hitting a couple of local reefs. Great drifts right over big piles, and tons of fish - resulting in a good news/bad news situation. Finally got a limit, YEAH! But it...
One of my buddies had decent fish yesterday to the West and another had some keeps on a local reef, so maybe the Moon did bring in a shot of better fish, as some believe. We shall see. . .
My last trip of the 2025 season had a couple of my better fish of the year, so maybe. Its been so very tough to find keepers up 'til now - almost a lost cause. Almost.
I've been thinking about the lack of boxable fish in my area for a while now. If the above were the case, how can we explain the fact that prior to this year the fluke fishing near the Block Island Windmill Farm has been solid for several seasons? And now no one is even fishing there anymore...
