2021 Fishing Ambitions

Cabin Fever is setting in, and I have started "plotting" my fishing ambitions for the current year. Here are my current plans...

  • Striper fishing - I fished for stripers 111 times last year and caught 575. Seems that I have a Striper Obsession problem and I need to have a personal Intervention. In my flimsy defense it's tough NOT to fish for them when you know that you can catch them within eyesight of the dock and even off the dock at times. However towards the goal of reducing my Striper Dependency:
    • I'll try using my flyrod more often, not just taking it out when the fish are committing suicide
    • Start taking "Split Charters", maybe hitting one or two striper spots in the river on the way out to do some ground or offshore fishing
    • Continue my 2020 habit of exploring other neighboring rivers, marshes and ocean ledges instead of the "normal" spots
  • Other Fishing Endeavors:
    • Do more offshore Tuna/Shark fishing - Had this "Team Sport" on the list for 2020, but a certain virus got in the way and one really needs at least one extra set of hands on board for this. Hopefully some of my fishing cohorts will have been vaccinated by this summer so we can get out.
    • Do more groundfishing - I need to find some consistently producing local spots that are good for pollock and/or haddock. I can do this solo if necessary, and it's a much better way of filling my belly and freezer, considering my throw back to keeper ratio on stripers is about 250:1 Think I'll shoot for a minimum of 1 trip per week and thoroughly explore the grounds surrounding Monhegan Island with some experimental flounder forays in the harbor there included.
That's my list, what about you folks?

Hoping that summer weaks are back, I would be satisfied to just duplicate last year off the kayak and beach. (I only boated three times and came home without a fish.) But repeating my modest catch off the yak of over half a dozen keeper fluke, same amount of blues, over a dozen keeper weaks and my new culinary favorite, northern kingfish, would make me happy. Plus two slot stripers off the autumn beach again and another sample of walking venison ? Heaven. I really do need to use the boat more though.

Great post Dom!

Honestly this year I am going to try and go out fishing on either more charters or open boat trips. Both by myself and with my son.

I’ve been kind of jaded the last 12 or so years because I’ve been working on boats for so long. It’s not that I don’t enjoy it as much anymore, it’s just different when your doing it and getting some sort of pay.

I may also look into purchasing a dory type skiff or a small center console.

I'm having my test Feb. 9th. :giggle:

Recently retired and now C19 vaccinated I am eager to fish frequently in 2021. That means more shore fishing and freshwater too. My BFF sold his business but not his Parker, so I'm hoping to join him often this year. I've already booked several charters from Jersey to New England, from Flukin to Toggin and everything in between. Really looking forward to Jigging World trip on Helen H in August - Nantucket fluke/seabass one dsy, Georges Bank cod/haddock the next. Fished this trip with these guys b4, it's like being on a floating tackle store. Also looking forward to long awaited trip back to Cape Coral to finslly fish tarpon with my childhood friend... hope we put Covid in the rear view mirror in 2021... stay well all...

God willing, but the best years of your life should start now, regardless of the china virus.
