Back yard critters

Today's "Mutual of Midcoast Maine's Wild Kingdom" was a conclave of ospreys over the backyard waterway. Counted 12 circling and squawking away. Guess the Brit Herring are in town. Hopefully when the alewives come and and the osprey do their yearly "Reenactment of the US Dive Bomber's Attack on the Japanese Carrier Fleet at the Battle of Midway" I'll be able to get some footage...

Nope, there is white in them, none in turkey vultures. They were flapping away, vultures usually soar. When osprey and eagles do glide, their wings are parallel to the ground, vultures make a distinct "V", kind of ironic. Finally listen to the sound track, those are osprey calls, vultures are silent when they fly.

Thought that might be the case, but here's a related "teaching moment". Some folks used to call ospreys "Buzzards" and there were thousands of them across New England prior to DDT. Care to guess why part of the MA Coast is known as "Buzzard's Bay?"

Is that like Sheep Meadow in Central Park., nyc, or Flatbush Brooklyn .. cellie...

Ugghhhh, had a noisy fox barking away at 04:30 waking me up today. Of course I'd much rather have that wake up call than sirens...

Noisy out there today, multiple osprey, a very vocal loon, and a bunch of eagles. Here's one sitting on my neighbor's dock...

What kind of trees ya got up there beside pines... cellie...

Oak, Maple, White Birch & Poplars...

Conifers - White Spruce, all dying from Witches Broom, a small mistletoe which is parasitic like regular mistletoe, White Pine, Juniper, & Hemlock

No sycamores up that way?

Not along the coast where I am, no hickory or ash either, but I know there's lots of ash inland. Borers just started to show up in Southern Maine.

Maple is good d for BBQ, soft maple I’m told , Oak too I know... cellie...

Native maple is red maple along the coast, but many planted sugar maples for the syrup.

Didn't realize how behind schedule we are this year, but I just saw my first skunk cabbage shoots. Sheesh it's May, that's about a month late!!!
