Blues everywhere...

This report is for Saturday the 22nd.
My brother called me up a few days ago and told me blues and bass were smashing the peanut bunker off of southport beach.
I took a ride down there last thursday with my brother and sure enough they were there just outside of our reach.

Friday he sent me pics of blues and a bass he caught and said he was going out saturday on his boat, so I made plans to meet him off of Penfield lightHouse on Saturday morning.
My son Charles also wanted to do some toggin so we brought crabs along just in case the blues didn't make a show.

We launched the boat at 7am and headed out the harbor, on the way out my son spotted birds off towards New Haven and we ran over to where they were, I hooked up immediately, so did Charles, I lost mine but Charles landed his, a blue about 12lbs, then all the boats showed up spooking the fish so we headed over to Penfield.

When we arrived at the Penfield light there were lots of boats fishing the rocks for tog, we saw birds working about half a mile away, I was just about to put the hammer down when all hell broke loose, blues and bass were jumping everywhere around the boat, I haven't seen this many blues in a long time, we were the only boat in this area and it didn't take long for the gatecrashers to show up.

We were using silver deadly dicks and silver epoxy jigs, every cast was a hookup, people using plugs were not hooking up.
I have to tell you it was exciting to see this many blues and bass together and in huge schools, my arms are killing me lol.

I caught one bass and lost him when I tried to lift him into the boat, that was the only one caught, the rest were all blues.

I called my brother on the radio and got no answer so I texted him, where are you?, he texted me back, I'm home having breakfast, I texted him back, Bro get your ass out to Penfield light the fish are everywhere, he showed up just in time to catch the tail end of the blitz.

The blues were spitting up peanut bunker 2 or 3 at a time, whole peanuts that were still alive lol.

My brother pulled up alongside of us and proceeds to tell me how crazy it is, yup it doesn't get any crazier than this. lol
So he took off towards the beach and that was the last I saw of him he texted me later with pics of the blues he got, apparently the blues chased the peanuts right up to beach.

We stopped fishing for the blues and decided to move into the rocks off of Penfield light, I found a spot that looked pretty good, dropped the hook, it didn't take long for the first tog to land in the boat. A short 15.5 and over it went, We tried to fish this spot but found it difficult because of all the boat traffic, boats were coming with in 20 feet of us chasing the blues around.
Couldn't stand up with the boar wakes so we left and went back to Milford point where we setup off the point and fished till 1.30pm, we had to be in by 2pm wash the boat and equipment so we could be on the road at 3pm to see my grandson Zac who is the goalie for the WestConn Wolves, they are undefeated and they were playing a team from Mass that was also undefeated.

What a game and the Wolves one 2 to 1, very proud of my grandson Zac he did a great job and is ranked among the highest.

Stay safe and healthy everyone, looks like a great start to the fall fishing.
Jay

I was wondering where the bigger blues were hangin'? The NY Bight has only had fish @ 14-16" for several weeks.

Now the bass insanity in Raritan Bay is wide-spread. Hundreds of boats chasing stripers up to 50"++. My nephew got his PB 44" girl last Friday 10/21 with popper on a 20lb spinner. They hit nearly everything if you can get away from the crowds. But, if you hook up....WATCH OUT!! Because they surround you in no time.

I'm not sure if we need another discussion about morons running or trolling through bunker pods/
