What reels would people recommend for Bonito Fishing on the East Coast? I am taking my first Bonito midrange trip this week and I've been told I need a spinning rod, which I don't own. I have small and large Torques, mostly, and some Abu Garcia MGX baitcasters..
My recommendation is something that's rated for 20 pound mono.
If you have the reel spooled with braid that's fine. Just add a top shot
or wind-on leader of 20 pound fluorocarbon. Nothing fancy to join the
lines. A simple double-uni works fine. In the long run it's going to be
the retrieve that makes the lure do it's thing. This is what's going to make
the difference.
You'll be fine with a 5000 size reel. Shimano, Penn, Tsunami etc are all good choices but follow Chunkster's recommendation about the top shot. Good advice.
I'd bring some extra fluoro leader in case there are blues around.
Sure, if you spool up with 15-20lb braid.
You'll need 0.75 - 1.5 oz lures.
007's, 017's, epoxy jigs, Tsunami Split Tail Minnows, etc.
Get used to casting underhand.
Most PB's don't allow over head casting.
I like a Shimano Sustain or a Stradic. 3000 with a 7' Medium Power St Croix. I line it with 20 pound braid and add a 10-12 foot 15 pound floro attached to a 3/4 ounce deadly dick. Once you're hooked up hold on!
Everyone has to be on the same page. What am I doing here.
I've been fortunate enough to sail many times anywhere from
3 to 5 days at a time.
One of the biggest mistakes I see are anglers showing up
without the proper footwear. This fish bleeds a lot! The deck
needs to be hosed down. The sun, heat, humidity, idling of
the diesel engine and the bloody deck can make you noxious.
