Books (Good reads) about fishing.

I never remember reading that Matt Ahern passed. I saw a few of his seminars. He was an excellent speaker. He borrowed the old Henry Ford comment regarding color: (paraphrasing) “Use any color bucktail you want, as long as its white”. I still have the Uncle Josh Bucktail Kit he recommended.

The Uncle Josh Bucktail Kit I have is much older than yours. Those are plastic jars of pork rind, and the buck tails are of a newer design from those used back in the day. The ones you posted resemble Spros. I still have containers of Uncle Josh Pork Rinds, but they are in glass containers, with metal screw caps. Basically they are glass jars of similar size to the newer plastic ones. The lids on mine show some signs of rust too.

The Perfect Storm……. Great book, great movie. Perhaps my favorite part……….

“The fog's just lifting. Throw off your bow line; throw off your stern. You head out to South channel, past Rocky Neck, Ten Pound Island. Past Niles Pond where I skated as a kid. Blow your air-horn and throw a wave to the lighthouse keeper's kid on Thatcher Island. Then the birds show up: black backs, herring gulls, big dump ducks. The sun hits ya - head North. Open up to 12 - steamin' now. The guys are busy; you're in charge. Ya know what? You're a goddam swordboat captain! Is there any thing better in the world?”

There have been more than a few mornings when I have been “steaming” offshore and as false dawn begins to appear those words enter my mind. LOL, and I’m not a sword fisherman.

One of the Coast Guard jumpers who in real life was part of that story, has spoken at my club, Freeport Tuna Club, on a couple of occasions.

Cod, by Mark Kurlansky, is a fantastic book. He explains how for 600 years, cod from the Grand Banks helped feed much of the Western World, including most of the slaves working the sugar fields in the Caribbean. That's why salt cod is part of the national dish of Jamacia, even though they have never seen a live one.
The Portuguese, in particular, were good at keeping their F'ing mouths shut for about 200 years.
Short book, quick read.
VERY interesting.

Jaws, on the other hand, in retrospect, has to be one of the stupidest movies of all time. I read the book 50 years ago and cannot recall how it differed from the movie.
The premise of the movie is that a giant shark has decided to stay inshore in the shallow water and feed on humans.
So what does Quint do to catch it? He heads offshore and expects to catch one specific fish, but not any others, even though it has set up a residence in the shallows.
After things turn bad, he busts up his radio.
Then what happens at the end when the shark is pursuing the Orca. What is Quint's plan? "'m going to draw him into the shallows and drown him!"

New England codfish helped feed the human world for 600 years, and then in about 50, we humans killed the fishery with greed.

It may be one of the stupidest movies of all time but it was one of the most successful movies of all time. Additionally, there are many, many thousands of people today that will not swim in the ocean due to a fear that the movie instilled in them. Richard Dreyfuss is one of those people.
