Isn't that what happened the last time this came around. If I remember their is a " If you were born after year " you must take the course. I think being born in 1947 I just made it under the cut.

What I always found stupid about the “born after 1996” law is that the majority of men who killed someone else while boating were drunks in their 30s and ignorant fathers

Looks like it has passed the New York State Senate. Hopefully we are finally going to have a 1 Day, 8hr boating couse.

I think the sad fact is responsible boat operators will take the course, the week end guy who fills the cooler with beer, & fills the boat with kids, I'm not so sure. Once again it comes down to enforcement. In NY fisherman can get the salt water registry for free with a 2 min phone call, or a couple taps on a keyboard, & look how many can't be bothered. How many of those guys & gals will invest, I don't know how many dollars & 8hrs to take a course. I'm not optimistic.

Pequa-1 The born after May 1st 1996 requirement was to slowly move the population toward having everyone take a Safe Boating Course. It was also for the politicians to avoid the "wrath" of the older seasoned boater. There were always proposals to slowly move the date back a few years at a time.

Didn’t work huh ? In some ways i hope there will be no grandfathering although there probably will be. Enforcement unfortunately is the key and that’s unlikely. Sort of the police bringing chalk after a home invasion. Not a case of better late than never

I think we all agree that on land, water, or air, the only way these safety requirements will have any effect is with enforcement, & on water that lays the burden at the feet of a group of Officers that are presently stretched pretty thin.
