Capt lou and the captree pride

Bassmaster

Well-Known Angler
Me and my father went fishing on the pride and the capt lou we both combined for over 200 fluke on those two trips and not one keeper at all. On the pride I had over 50 fluke on the diamond jig last keeper I had was on miss montauk that giant sea bass. Lots of fish just no size. The pride had over 1000 fish on the boat and maybe 10 keepers. Going to combine two trips in one report for magnolia pier going tomorrow. Tight lines

MoJo,
Just got back from my Second Peconic Bay Porgy fishing trip and I caught a small number of porgies and one seabass. They say it's great Porgy Fishing out there, I didn't see anybody fishing for Porgies inside the Bay. Everybody was drifting for Fluke and I didn't see one fish caught. What an awful year I'm having , I read the Ocean Fluking was excellent , that's what I'm doing next. Next time I go out there I'm following the party boats. It's too big a bay for somebody like me to pinpoint where the fish are. So frustrating, got out there when it was a very strong outgoing tide. Years past I always had excellent Porgy fishing out there, tried the Greenlawns and outside Dering Harbor . The AI fishing reports said Dering Harbor had really good Porgy fishing. Plenty of Porgy Bites but the tide was too strong.

Panga, your last sentence is a very important clue. People who are unfamiliar with the area think that because they are fishing in the bay, they do not have to pay close attention to the tidal stage or moon phase. Until you understand that the current in the Peconics can run just as fast as it does out in the eastern LI Sound you will probably still be frustrated with your results. And following the party boats alone will not cure that. BTW, experience will also show you where you can actually fish during the strength of the tide and still catch well.

Obviously, it is your choice, but if you can get 2 or 3 friends together and book me for a charter, I can teach you a lot about how, when and where to go to maximize your efforts on Scup.

Thanks for the offer Capt. Mike , I appreciate you wanting to help. Not making excuses , but right now I go out there based on the weather ( wind less than 10 -15) and the tide has to be going the right way because my engine goes into safe mode almost every other trip and I can only go 2 miles an hour. I can't really go far from the Boat Ramp these days. My engine Diagnostic Program shows nothing seriously wrong.
I doubt I'll go out there again anytime soon, Man I get so pooped at age 62.
I saw how fast the current was running while fishing outside Dering Harbor .
There's a big red ball off the Greenlawns, any idea why it's there ? saw no Commercial #'s on the ball.

My Motor went into Safe Mode about 4 hours into my trip yesterday. Had to limp all the way back to Port Of Egypt area going 2 knots into a strong outgoing tide. Don't know how I ever made it back to the ramp !! Was very scary with all those Ferries going back and forth. All the way from Dering Harbor to Port of Egypt area.

Nobody here knows this area better than Capt Mike!

Panga- I highly recommend you pay attention to and take his advice and suggestions seriously. I know there’s nothing more satisfying than finding them and catching them yourself on your own but booking a charter and learning firsthand from him will definitely help you to be able to do it on your own in the future!!

Yes Mojoe I’ve had a few good trips this season. I try and fish the tides as there is a very small window when the bigger fish turn on. And sometimes it doesn’t happen, I am also drifting live bait that I feel also helps with the bigger fish. Unfortunately it’s really not a good season as the number of keepers are way down. When fishing 3 to 4 guys and boat 50’60’70 fish and pull 3 keepers maybe 4 if you’re having a good day. There are many very small fluke around some of the smallest I’ve seen. That picture of five keepers three of them came up relatively fast and think we got lucky with the other two. When I am using a bucktail I am wasting my gulps as the small fish are just destroying them. I had a friend was on a captree boat this week and he had about 75 shorts and one keeper at 19.5. Definitely bending rods as far as dinner goes have plan B because keepers are far and few between

It's not that I don't wanna learn from a Pro like Capt. Mike, I'm just not a partyboat/charter Boat kind of guy like when I was younger. I haven't gone on a boat for hire in decades. Use to all the time.
