After 10+ days of east wind and a few cancellations I finally took a “busman’s holiday” yesterday determined to stock up my own freezer. Frist stop was back west to prospect a few drops for Sunday’s upcoming Porgy charter. Still, lots of fish there so good news for tomorrow’s crew.
Then hit the Gut for the middle 2 hours for the ebb and no shortage of big mean Bluefish to keep the rod bending. Fortunately, I also managed 2 Stripers with one being a slot fish so dinner was assured.
On to the Sea Bass grounds with hopes that the recent lack in pressure would restore a better number of keepers to the traditional spots. First over to the CT side which has been very consistent for me for a couple of years and even up to early Sept. this year. Sadly, all I found was the continued stream of shorts and even more Porgies to steal my baits.
So, my plan was to head back to one of my old reliable drops north of Plum and set up anchor for slack water. With a quarter phase moon, I had a good 2 hours to work and it finally paid off. Sure, I sorted through many small Sea Bass but ultimately, I was able to cull my 6 fish limit and go home with a big smile on my face. No big biscuits but all the keepers were 16.5-17.5” fat fish. The last 40 minutes were literally “drop and stick” with most of the keepers taken then. So, some of my faith has been restored.
Got the Crab carts in the water behind the boat and anxiously awaiting the opening bell for Tog season. I bet everyone else is too! Very few weekend dates remain in November and some weekday openings so if Tog is your passion, it is best to call me soon.
