I circled the vessel, grabbed some shots, and that F/V jumped to full speed and headed directly south in a quick manner. Oh, and I guess far enough to then turn east. Hmmmmmmm

that might be forced waste because of regulations just like all 11 to 16 inc sea bass which a lot float the same way anyone fishing more than 40 years knows this system is not working

I’ve been fishing for more than 60 years. I’ve seen it go from the Wild, Wild West to where we are today. Had we not implemented regulations there would be no fish to catch today.

Is it perfect, no, far from it. There’s an old saying……….. “You don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.” There are no simple answers or solutions, but we have made tremendous progress in understanding these diverse marine environments, and how best to allocate these resources for the stakeholders involved.

My sense of your comments tells me that all you bring to the table are anecdotal observations which do have some value, but little. Science should rule the day, not fishermen.

I too have been fishing on LI for over 60 years, and I agree with your comments completely. We have seen some very good examples of correctly managed fisheries rebounding while others have collapsed, in part, due to bad decisions or completely ignoring the science that is available.

I think that is where much of our frustration is rooted. Any sane person would want a vital resource like fish properly managed by using the best data available. However, anyone who watches or participates at almost any level with the management process has seen the "so called scientists" completely ignore solid data that is presented to them. Unfortunately, there are the behind-the-scenes forces like influence peddling and political favors that wind up screwing us way too often.

I won't stop gong to meetings to offer my own data and observations trying to do what little I can. But it is very demoralizing when you see the same mistakes being made over and over again.

Capt Mike i believe i met you at a meeting you and many others made excellent points but were totally ignored by the powers to be MAko matt while we all want to believe this is better than nothing these people were supposed to do ecosystem management sine around 2000 they have yet to do it and any one that goes fishing now thinks striped bass are in trouble but other fish are not is simply not understanding that we can't think that 40 and 50 striped bass over 28 inches catches a day is a fishery in trouble that is not science it is saying we want a one fish dominant ecosystem .Secondly if this was science why is all done from a lap top what about inshore water quality did changing the sewer treatment plants to kill nitrogen bring back the grasses I can tell you in Jamaica bay the grass is dyeing by killing the nitrogen are they killing the algae that is the beginning of the food chain.Lastly at ASMFC meetings when they were asked do large fish eggs as fertile as small fish they couldn't answer and at the same time we are seeing spawning problems they opened up fishing in the previously closed spawning area and when asked isn't afish ready to spawn more important to not harm there math problem says no so yes mako matt you are right but after almost 50 years dont you think we and future fisherman deserve better
