Captain's Table - Porgy Madness Continues + Weaks

Took advantage of the beautiful weather this past Thursday and Friday to complete 2 more charters in the bay.

For Thursday I had the honor of hosting everyone’s favorite retired PB Captain and Custom Rod Builder, Capt. Neil Faulkner and his buddies for a half day trip. Capt. Neil loves to refer to the group as the “Ancient Mariners”, very funny~! I told them there were some Weakfish around and if we could get our baits past the massive Porgy population perhaps we could find one or two for the box. So, we spent a hour drifting a nice slope and while the Scup we thick we managed to pull 2 Weaks including a nice 5.5# fish for Tom.

Next on to the same spot the served up a quick boat limit of large Porgies on Tuesday and once again it was game on as soon as the baits hit the bottom. The guys had a terrific time of culling through a steady stream of fish saving only the largest for the filet table and a bunch of larger specimens headed for the smoker. As usual there was the occasional, out of season, “heartbreak” Sea Bass as well as a short Fluke that found the clam baits interesting. A fantastic day on the water for a bunch of classy guys.

Yesterday the Scott group wanted to approach the Scup bite with maximum enjoyment as their plan. Light spinning rods with 10# braid and small jigs were their arsenal. I told them an hour spent on the Weakfish grounds would be worth a shot and things improved a bit over the prior day on this front. Friday’s crew was rewarded with 8 Weakfish of which 4 between 3-6# made it to the box along with many large Scup to spice things up.

Our first drop for Porgies was the scene of 2 straight days of nonstop action. However, it turned out differently this time. Large schools of bunker were being harassed by the now growing Bluefish population and the Blues scared the daylights out of the Porgies. So, we moved west to another drop that produced well for me last week. This time all birds!? Finally, the third drop was Porgy Central and the guys did plenty of damage on the Scup population putting dozens of jumbos in the box and enjoying every battle on the light spinning gear.

Not a bad way to finish the first week of my new charter season! Back at it again on Monday. Stay tuned for more updates.

I heard in parts of the bay, gorilla blues were tearing up the weakfish in such a massacre that there were rafts of floating weakie swim bladders!!!

That is some fine fishing!

Of course now that Im ready to make a run that way I’m seeing alot of strong SW wind in the forecast this week
Hoping to get a window one day this week?
I know, Mitch. Almost the opposite form last week both with breeze and temperatures.
I have trips tomorrow, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday. Right now, tomorrow morning looks like the best window.

Good luck and be safe if you go.
