Despite many disappointing fall weather forecasts, todays was a real gift from the God’s. Steve and his friends Dan, Tom, and Bill got to enjoy a nice quiet LI Sound and unseasonably warm temperatures for an early November trip.
Frist stop on the start of the ebb was my favorite jig spot on the CT side and while it took me a couple of tries to position the boat properly as soon as were dialed in Bill hooked up with our first keeper Tog of the day just as the anchor came tight.
Lots of light bites and some sorting, as usual but not much later Steve connects with another 17” fish for the box. I had a chance to drop my jig quickly among all the action and also contributed one more Tog of a similar size. Then Steve gets a strong hit, his spinner doubles over and the drag starts screaming. Just as I approach with the net the fish makes a huge lunge for the rocks and cuts him off at the leader…darn that was a good one! As the tide began to slow so did the action, but Bill managed to find one more keeper before it was time to move outside to the local reef.
Once on the high spot there the action took off very quickly. While both Tom and Dan had struggled in the shallows, they more than made up for it on this deeper drop. First Tom decks a fat 4# fish. Then Dan matches him with one of his own. Another keeper or two for the crew then the big boys started to chew near the end of the ebb. Dan puts a beautiful 5.5# fish on the deck then Tom follows quirkily with one pushing 6 #. Almost immediately after that Dan lands another one even closer to the 6# mark! Within the next 20-30minutes the crew filled out their limit as the sun pushed the temps to nearly the70 degree mark and layers started to come off. Not too many Sea Bass as by catch today but Steve did manage to find one keeper size fish near the end of the day.
Now it is back to waiting for the weather/winds to settle down again so we can resume our attack on the very reliable North Fork Tog fishing. I only have a few weekdays left in November so if you want to give this fantastic fishing a try give me a call soon.
