Had Mike D. and his crew of 4 join me today for the start of the Fall Tog season 2024. With a forecast of WNW winds around a steady 15 with some higher gusts I opted to fish the CT side of the Sound.
First drop in a nice protected 18' drop saw slow action with lots of small Sea Bass a few Porgies and the occasional Tog. With a steady effort the guys put 4 keepers in the box here to 17.5". Next moved out to the nearby reef for a 48' drop near the end of the ebb. Lots of action out here with many more Sea Bass, but only one keeper biscuit. A few more Tog on this spot with the largest fish of the day a nice 6 # fish for Mike along with two more 16-17" keepers.
Around noon time the wind really picked up steam, due west with the big rollers cruising down the middle of the Sound. Hoped to find some lee just north of Plum but the due west component just kept things very nasty. Finally finished up in a slightly more protected drop just west of the Orient Lighthouse with a better pick of all Tog. No monsters here but the guys did manage to box 4 more keepers here to close out the day with a total of 11 fish, just one shy of our limit. Sorry, no pictures today in the rolling seas but at least it was a decent opener in somewhat challenging conditions.
Many more trips coming up as soon as the weather settles down again and with it, I am sure we will see improved catches.
