Captain's Table - What's for Dinner...Bass & Weakfish!

Today I had a threesome of regulars join me for a combo Bass/Weakfish trip to kick off summer. For once, the weather actually cooperated on a weekend date and the skies were clear with light winds making for very pleasant conditions.

I opted for the morning Ebb tide at the Gut as it had provided a consistent bite on the last few trips. Of course, today the fish had a different plan in mind. While we had a perfect drift, about 90 minutes of effort only yielded one 29” slot Bass for Ricky. So, to bail out the Bass portion of the trip we took the ride east to the Race.

We were greeted by a virtual “city” full of boats here which made setting up the drifts difficult while the ebb tide was running really hard. Still, the guys persevered and managed to pick 3 more nice slot fish with a couple of drops to fill out the Bass limit here. John scored with the best fish of the day at a healthy 30”.

Back to the bay and the Weakfish were much more cooperative. Tony hits a nice 3# keeper on the very first drift and then John and Ricky follow suit with keepers on the next couple of drifts. As I finished cleaning the Bass John’s drag starts to scream as he enjoyed a very spirited fight with a fine 5# Weak to close out the day.

Looking forward to the start of Sea Bass season next week and hope to put a few tasty ones in the box next Wednesday. Then a string of Sea Bass charters on the books for early July plus I plan to begin the Montauk trek for Fluke as I hear the bite is finally starting to take off in the ocean.

Plenty of open dates for Montauk Fluke this summer so give me a call if you want to take advantage of some nice flatfish action with the ever-present shot at a real doormat!
