carbon monoxide detectors

I received this email today from the NYS DMV, probably going to see another new boating law soon in NY. It makes sense for inboards, IOs or boats with generators but not for outboards

Dear Boaters,

Carbon monoxide from boat engines can build up in an enclosed or semi-enclosed spaces and create poisoning hazards resulting in death.

If your boat has an enclosed compartment, the State of New York strongly encourages you to install a carbon monoxide detector.

I got the same email. You are probably right. Another reg on the way for a battery operated CO detector in every cabin. BTW, with a stern wind, a cabin could still fill with CO from an outboard or any system that exhausts through or at the stern.

Aquarius, under certain conditions, carbon monoxide can enter the cabin when the boat is moving forward. Some hull designs are more prone than others for this to happen. I knew someone who shall remain nameless, and when this person ran his boat the cockpit up to and including the companionway bulkhead, would get covered with exhaust soot.

Yes, very true. Just like the vortex that forms behind the back window in the bed of a pickup truck.

The Station Wagon affect. It's real and has caused many to get sick and some to die. Especially in cold weather and folks have little fuel heaters. Like urchin and scallop divers. I have used one for the last 25 years or so. Short money for the protection.
