We've done both Viking River (1st) and Viking Ocean (2nd). Ocean's service is the same level of excellence as the river cruise, and since there are multiple dining options, more choices, including 24/7 room service; we had breakfast in our state room just about every day. The on-board Italian place is amazing, wonderful risotto and Bistecca alla Fiorentina. The other sit down, alternate restaurant is fancy and they have a revolving menu so do your research and get reservations at these places before you leave. The normal sit down restaurant is excellent too, as is the cafe that's sort of a buffet, but not really as most dishes are handed to you. This place had a Sushi/Sashimi buffet at dinner. I love eating bait, so before having dinner at one of the sit down places, I'd have some appetizers up there or I'd stop up after dinner and got me a plate for a midnight snack. BTW, NO Midnight buffets, like you need it on a cruise. With the 24/7 room service there is no need...

The one major difference are the complimentary port tours. On the river boat, the complimentary port tours were generally excellent. We did the Danube/Rhine tour and only booked 2 optional tours. On the ocean cruise, at least the one we were on, "In Search of the Northern Lights, the complimentary tours were mediocre at best. You may find yourself spending a lot more for tours so you may want to find alternates in advance. We did and found identical tours at 1/2 the price.

We were scheduled to go on the Viking Elbe river cruise this fall, but have rebooked it for Fall, 2021. Looking forward to that!!
 
Guides and docents on the Seine and on the Rhine were terrific. Hard to imagine that for Rome, Florence, Monaco, Marseille, Barcelona, etc. they won't be as well. Will do some internet research regarding the Viking shore excursions though and see what others have said about this particular cruise. We are starting off with an extra two nights in Rome. Presently, am wondering whether this fall's planned road trip to Cooperstown, Canadian Falls, Alex. Bay, etc. will be cancelled.
 
Break. Break. (As we used to say.) It seems NY China virus deaths were back over 100 yesterday. Wife is having her second cataract surgery Thursday. I will drop her off and head to the parking lot, LOL ! They can call me when she is done ! Actually, for all I know, the eye surgery center may very well be limiting waiting room to just patients and banishing us drivers anyway. Just got my set of almost new Fahey's US NavyShips and Aircraft of WW2 so I will have something to read. Hate using my wife's Kindle. Really looking forward to my library reopening.
 
Hopefully when they do everybody wears a mask!!

I believe , not necessarily agree with , you will see a marked increase across the board in irregular and in some cases illegal activity with the coming decrease in capacity and corresponding decrease in earning potential for hired captains and deck hands. In short a return to the bad old days . Simply because they will have a decrease in earning but their bills will remain the same.

I don’t believe it’s a good thing and I do believe many operations will attempt to curtail it, I know not all will try and many simply won’t be abel to fight it

Yes, check on your particular cruise. It could certainly be cruise specific, as we had the same level of excellence on the river cruise that you saw.
