Coronavirus: WHO backflips on virus stance by condemning lockdowns

The World Health Organisation has backflipped on its original COVID-19 stance after calling for world leaders to stop locking down their countries and economies.

Dr. David Nabarro from the WHO appealed to world leaders yesterday, telling them to stop “using lockdowns as your primary control method” of the coronavirus.

He also claimed that the only thing lockdowns achieved was poverty – with no mention of the potential lives saved.
Maybe just Maybe if more people would participate in social distancing and wearing masks we would not need lock downs.

OPINION | I will not wear a mask. Why, you ask? Because I am a free man — born free, as free as the lion, and the thundercloud, and the 1970 Oldsmobile 442, and nobody in their right mind would ask a lion, a thundercloud or a vintage Olds 442 to wear a mask, because nature made them free, and freedom doesn’t wear a mask, so neither do I.

This one isn't as ludicrous as it seems. I know of many who are doing quite well thanks to the pandemic, one being a former client who owns a small company that produces a critical reagent for COVID-19 diagnostic tests, sales off the charts....

I'm confused. I'd swear that I heard someone on the news last night claiming that "We've turned the corner..." regarding COVID-19. Guess I'm not remembering correctly, or the claimant hadn't checked the CDC data...

Exhaustion and impatience are creating new risks as coronavirus cases soar in parts of the world. Nearly 40 million people have been infected globally.

The U.S. surpassed eight million known cases this past week, and reported more than 70,000 new infections on Friday, the most in a single day since July. Eighteen states added more new infections during the past week than in any other during the pandemic.

In Europe, cases are rising and hospitalizations are up. Britain is imposing new restrictions, and France has placed cities on “maximum alert.” Germany (Munich, pictured above) and Italy set records for the most new daily cases. This is the state of the virus around the world.

The virus has taken different paths through these countries as leaders have implemented a range of restrictions. But a common sentiment emerged: a public weariness of the coronavirus and a growing tendency to risk its dangers, out of desire or necessity.

One New Yorker summed it up: “I am so tired of everything. Is it going to be over? I want it to be over.”

The only metric that matters is mortality. Infections/Cases is a BS metric.
Agreed. Thankfully we have the CDC, an federal organization that was set up specifically for something like this.
And they want to federalize health care ?‍♂️

I will take a bit of a contraposition in that as an epidemic continues things change on the population and treatment sides.

  • As things progress, folks with compromised immune systems and comorbidities succumb to the disease. Later in the epidemic, there are fewer of these patients left so even though infections are increasing, the number of deaths could be flat or deceasing. The old and the sickly are always the first to go.

  • As an epidemic of a novel virus progresses medical science continually rewrites and improves its playbook in terms of which treatments work, and what diagnostic tests they need to monitor to help them improve treatment of patients.
    • New treatments come on line (Remdesivir, Sera from recovered patients, Monoclonal Antibody Infusion, dexamethasone), treatments that were not available at the onset of the pandemic. We also learn which ones don't work so well (Hydroxchloroquine, Azithromycin).

    • Medical Science gets "smarter" knowing how to better test patients to know if they'll be slipping into a dangerous condition, e.g. Bradykinin Storm, Cytokine Storm, etc.
Yes, deaths are down, but the skyrocketing increase in cases is still a very disconcerting and dangerous data set, It should not be minimized or downplayed.

Had a infection of my windpipe January 2020 that was severe enough for me to get to the Dr in 2 days. I'm never that pro-active. Never had a diagnosis like that, Azithroymicin worked wonderfully.

Since this is seemingly uncharted territory, I believe there are misconceptions on what works for who - age, blood type, pre-existing conditions, vitamin deficiencies, etc. And I'm not sure the CDC is charting it correctly.

EDIT: More that they're not reporting on it
