Many diseases that were once thought to be eradicated or under control have made a comeback, including:
  • Measles: Considered wiped out in 2000, there have been outbreaks in recent years, including in Massachusetts, Illinois, and California.

  • Whooping cough: This highly contagious disease was almost entirely eradicated in 1976, but outbreaks have been reported in recent years.

  • Scarlet fever: This disease has seen a resurgence globally, including in England.

  • Diphtheria: In 2018, an outbreak in Bangladesh caused nearly 8,000 cases.

  • Trench fever: In 2020, four homeless men in Winnipeg, Canada were identified with trench fever and associated heart problems.

  • Syphilis and chlamydia: These sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) don't respond as well to antibiotics as they used to.

  • Leprosy: Also called Hansen's disease, this illness is caused by bacteria that attack your nerves.

  • Plague: Still affects up to 3,000 people a year.
Other diseases that have made a comeback include:

Tuberculosis, Cholera, Pertussis, Influenza, Pneumococcal disease, Gonorrhea, and Mumps.

Factors that can contribute to disease resurgence include drug resistance and extreme weather events.
