Lost summer socially ?
Just wondered whether or when we will be able to forget about the masks and social distancing. Kayaking is of course not a "problem" but will I ever get to share my pool and barbecue this summer with my inlaws or will my buddy and I go out on each other's boats ? When we bicycle or walk in the local park I carry a mask but rarely have to put it on. We have hotel reservations on the Canadian side, at Alexandria Bay, Cooperstown etc for the last of September, first week of October. Any bets as to whether the border will be open? I can't imagine taking vacation photos of each other masked up. We have taken this quite seriously, gloves and masks for the grocery store or takeout, and my pool supplies all came on the bbt. OTOH, I don't know anyone who died, although several acquaintances got pretty sick.

It depends I guess. I’ve been going down the shore every summer for as long as I can remember. We stay at the same hotel. Should I bother this summer I’m not sure. The beach is open but not the pool and some of the local restaurants are open for takeout. It’s good for a change of scenery but definitely not the norm. Not sure if it’s worth it.

Meanwhile there are 12 people playing volleyball at Marjorie Post Park in Matzohpizza and a larger group gathered together in a Seaford LIRR parking lot. Not a mask in sight. will all the demonstratons and marches cause a spike ? Mothers Day didn't and there were parties all over here.

In the end it’s all going to come down to you
What your comfortable with, and the risk that you are willing to accept to live a normal life .
Same as with the rest of life

do you take precautions during flu season?
When meeting women ( if your single)
You do realize that prostitution is still a huge industry regardless of the risk
Drug use and alcohol abuse abound
Ppl still drive drunk and smoke cigarette , cigars , pot and crack

Only you can answer what type of life you’re going to enjoy
Not the govt,

most ppl have already started returning to their lives

will you ?

Married 40 years this September. Never smoked, never did drugs, no arrests, no prostitutes, and hardly drink at all since 1975 or so. Don't take any precautions during flu season except for getting the shot, but this china virus is NOT the flu. While I would hate to cancel our scheduled upstate road trip at the end of September, compromising reaching age 70 and beyond next year isn't something I am willing to do. Just dropped off birthday stuff for my son's girlfriend, not a hug or handshake exchanged. Oh well, going to swim some laps and mull the responses over.

I didn’t say you did pequa1
Merely that ppl do
And have for centuries

only you can decide your level of comfort and your willingness to do things

That’s simply the way it’s going to be

not because I say so
Because history has proven it
With drugs
With sex
With prohibition
With smoking and so it will be with covid and moving forward with our lives
Ppl will make their own conscious decisions and a great many have already decided

look at the protesters
Look at the folks at that lake of the ozarks
Just look around you at this moment in time
It’s already happening and there no way to stop it

your just going to have to do what you feel is right

I’m already back to shaking hands With ppl
And hugging relatives if they are

I’ll be running the boat , and dinning out
As those things open , shopping in stores and taking in person golf lessons as those things get back to nor
Playing golf and shaking hands with my playing partners
Simply because that’s the way life is meant to be lived

they only way there will ever be a new normal is if ppl want a new normal , my bet is they are not going to accept this new normal regardless of the risk , will some sure , will it take hold I don’t think so
I think some I’m govt will try and make it stick and the harder the

I simply refuse to live my life in fear or put it on hold to await a vaccine that may never come or be effective if it does

I don’t blame you for doing what you think is best for you , I just don’t agree that the vast majority of society will go along from here on out

Kind of like you financial portfolio; it's all a matter of what level of risk you are comfortable with, realizing that there are those who will not respect you by wearing a mask and staying 6' away. Aye, there's the rub.

Now that things are opening up, many folks figure life is back to the pre-pandemic normal, not back to the new normal of masks and social distancing. New spikes are beginning to show as expected based on the "Stupid Human" tricks we've been seeing on TV including that Lake of the Ozarks debacle.

You take play your cards and takes your chances. Myself, I've never been a fan of going to the Casino...

If I were still working this whole thing would absolutely kill me. I did background investigations for Uncle and probably shook the hands of a dozen people daily. (No hugs, that would be unseemly.) One year maybe 2007 or so they told us not to shake hands because of some flu. I rolled my eyes and on the way out of the meeting recall saying no effing way. For me, the older you get, the longer you want to live. My new kayak is just two years old !

Guess we’re going to see how this plays out
But the writings been on the wall for a while

Ppl are for better of worse making their own choices

several bars and restaurant's are working underground ( and they are very busy )
No ones asked me to leave a store because I don’t wear a mask ( I will happily leave if confronted by the shop keeper )
No other customer has even blinked

It May come back, I’m not even going to argue that point
end of the day I don’t think the public will continue on the path laid out by the scientist or govt regardless
It’s simply goes against human nature , and too many ppl don’t believe the juice is worth the squeeze

similar boat for me Mr. P..................

Many of the restaurants here have gone to outdoor seating @50% capacity - I'm uncomfortable taking part even though I really miss the socializing.
Never got a flu shot - never had the flu. Even though I was sharing a house with two people who would get it (ex wife & daughter). Even as a kid living with my parents & 3 brothers all of who would come down with the flu from time to time. Father always said Medical Science should be doing a work up on my blood.

Actually I never really get sick at all. Haven't had the common cold in like 20 years. Don't plan on ever getting a flu shot.

However....................
When/if they ever come up with a CORVID vaccine - I do plan on getting that. Like you I also have the age thing to deal with @ 68.

Until I see the number of cases start dropping here or a vaccine is available - I will forgo visiting restaurants for things other then take out. Luckily I'm retired & don't have that dilemma to deal with.

I don’t disagree with that to a point in the 65/70 year age group I here that being said quite a bit

In the under 60 group hardly at all and amongst my parents friends and my friends parents 78 to 85 the generally feeling I get is enough of this crap we’re not giving up our family and friends for this bullshit

I’m not saying right or wrong
Just what Im getting from within my circle

I thought no one caught the china flu as a result of attending the Lake of the Ozarks "pool party?"

No surprises there. Maybe in 10 years I will feel the same way, that not enough years are left to leave out all the things we enjoy most. Now, Wader and I obviously want to make those ten plus years and can make these small sacrifices to do so. It is amazing that when one is "out and about" one sees people driving with the mask on, (won't do that even though R7 will scold me that by taking it on and off I could inhale one of those pesky viruses) that some families are obviously letting their kids play all over the neighborhood without masks, and that I have yet to see anyone at the boat ramp wearing one, me included when I put in the yak. Mowed the lawn earlier and certainly wouldn't wear one then either. With eyeglasses, small ears, and the old style hearing aids, I can only comfortably use a mask with elastic. Put simply its just a pita to wear the other kind and all I wear at the grocery store is one of those dust masks you wear when sanding. I told the wife that if we have to wear masks at the Canadian falls I am not going.
