Price was $199, now $109. Can't beat that with a stick!
This is a major buy, as the Procyon AL LT is the same reel as the Ballistic LT - which is what I've used for several years now (in the 2500 size) to extract big fluke from the offshore grounds here outside of Jones Inlet, flawlessly. The gear train is still silky smooth, despite my best efforts to trash it in the deep.
The differences between the Procyon AL LT and Ballistic LT are as follows - the Procyon is made of aluminum, not Zaion, a type of carbonized plastic - this could be a big plus, if you want to use it double-duty for tog jigging as well as fluke. Much better to have the uber-rigid aluminum for the heavier fishing.
The Procyon LT does NOT have the dopey mag seal under the spool, rather, it uses a simple rubber washer - like nearly every decent reel on Earth, other than the newer mid-to-higher-end Daiwas. This is not something to just sluff off, as that mag seal fluid is pretty much only available for replacement from Daiwa, and they will NOT sell it to the public. Obviously they are using it as a lock-out, so to force one to use the factory or factory-authorized shops to do your maintenance. Not cool. There are some substitute mag fluids available on Ebay, and I've linked to them in posts over the years. But who knows if they really are a direct replacement? Not me, and not anybody else I know that repairs reels. So the Procyon LT wins here too.
Finally, the Procyon AL is the last of Daiwa's great LT series, meaning no MQ monocoque body, which requires a special tool to open the reel to service its gear train. Can you guess who won't sell us that tool? Yep, that's right, Daiwa. This again forces an owner that wants to service his own reel to search out an after-market tool on Ebay - which may or may not actually work for the Daiwa MQ reel he owns. Are you seeing a pattern here with this Daiwa MQ stuff?
One other, admittedly subjective point. I think this is about the prettiest small spinner on the market. That might be insignificant to some, but I do like my pretty tackle, and so to me its yet another point that counts in this reel's favor.
Anyway, I think this is a super deal. The only reel that might compete with it around this price range is the Shimano Spheros SW 3000, and I believe that reel has increased to around $139. So you get to save $30 going with this deal for the Procyon, and believe me, at this price its worth every penny. Move fast, as these deals are only good for a day or two. Once the reel sells out, that's that. It happened with the similar deal on the Penn Clash II, and for sure it'll happen here as well.
