FG Knot

Hello Lep, & everyone,

I have recently entered into the “snowbird” lifestyle, with a retreat here in Venice, FL, as well as maintaining my NY home. I am however an official Florida resident so good bye NY taxes.

The fishing is much different from the NE here on Gulf Coast. My question right now pertains to knots, more specifically, the FG knot. I usually use a form of the albright, and for the most part I am happy with that.

Down here, spinning rods are use much more that up north. ive been told the the FG knot is a lot easier to go through the guides when casting so hence my question concerning this knot. Or any other knots you might recommend.

Thanks

Hi Matt - glad to hear from you and that you’re doing well in “a far better place.”

I’ve written quite a bit about the FG, and its kissin’ cousin, the Bobbin PR knot - which I greatly prefer.

Either knot will easily pass thru the newer “micro-type” guides and especially, those teeny-tiny tip-tops.

Give a quick search and when I get a few minutes I’ll track some of it down for you myself.

Do love that Bobbin PR myself! ?

I have to look again at the Bobbin. As you know I've been using a double uni. I had great success with it until one day when I made a cast and pulled out the ceramic on one of my guides. I have tried the FG but I can't seem to get it right!

O.K., here's an appropriate thread for your viewing pleasure. It contains some tasty nuggets, including how to use the Bobbin to make my fav knot:

WOW, there’s a lot to digest here reading back on previously posted threads on this subject. Lot of different knots with varying challenges on tying.

Thank you,, I need to read more, try some, etc., and I’ll get back.

I have been working on the fg but it's a struggle. I found this knot and I was wondering what you thought. Much stronger than a double uni.

Hi George - that's the regular old Albright knot. Been around for ages. It will clang through smaller guides and in some instances hang in them and pop the ceramic ring. This goes double if you happen to have micro or semi-micro guides (or top) on your rod. If you've got a codfish stick, or another rod with fair-sized guides, then all good with the Albright. If you don't, then there are better, less abusive alternatives.

This was/is the reason that everyone is searching for an alternative knot - and the FG or the Bobbin knot are the best alternatives. Try ordering in a bobbin and give that a try. I really like it a lot. Kinda cool.

George - if you're gonna use an Albright, which can slip if not tied right, give this one a try instead:

You can use either an Improved Clinch Knot or Uni to finish it. When I spool braid on a reel, I use about twenty turns of mono first and then the above knot to connect the mono backing to my braid. Works nice and not complicated.

Rather than using any mono backing when tying braid directly to the spool, I just wrap the bottom of the spool with electrical tape. Have not had any issues doing that.

I just spooled three of my fluke setups with fresh line. A couple of turns of electrical tape on the spool hub (3M Type 33+, of course!), plus two layers of mono backing. Set up this way there is Zero possibility of braid-to-spool slippage.

Nutso! Probably for the Stella-using crowd, the guys with the 4 outboards on their 50' center consoles.
Hey, what's a coupla' million between friends? Its only money.

For the rest of us, this is what I use:

$19 Shipped - from AliExpress. Why, it even comes with a nice little user's manual - which is great, if you can read Mandarin. Nah, there's lots of line-drawn pix in it too. 8-)

I know I am raising an old topic but I read through here and decided to try the PR bobbin knot. After lot of painful practice attempts ( my finger's got raw from the tension spinning) I can now tie the know fairly easily in a home setting. I will not be tying this one on the water (kayak) but so far I do like the strength of the knot and the smoothness through the guides.

I gave the FG a go a couple years ago but had the leader slip once and gave it up on it.

I went back to a snap and barrel swivel for my kayak rigs. Had to change rigs last month and with wet fingers, wet braid and a bit of a breeze...even with a lot of fairly silent cursing, no way! I might start off again next year with one of those knots but the moment I need to change a rig it will be back to a snap, a swivel, and improved clinch knots, which I can try on the yak.

If I am on the yak, the uni to uni is my go to. just not the greatest on micro guides
