Fished Sunday at Rockaway Reef

I went with 4 friends to Rockaway Reef in hopes of finding a mixed bag of porgies, sea bass and fluke. Lines in at 6:30 a.m. While we caught sea bass, fluke, blackfish, sea robins, sand sharks, spiny dogfish and skates we only managed 1 keeper fluke about 20 inches. No porgies. Not even a discernable porgie bite. Drifted a small portion of the reef.
Most boats out there ended up near us so I am guessing it wasn’t better elsewhere. I forgot how sticky rockaway can be. We had over 30 snags. Moved the boat, got some back, lost about a dozen rigs.
Saw a couple of boats anchored. Looks like they were picking through small sea bass. Only saw short fluke and sea bass come up on other boats.
A good ride out. We were greated by pods of feeding dolphins and at least 1 whale. Left when the wind started blowing at 2:30.
The hot color of gulp seemed to be salmon though pink shine was working and a few were caught on every color. Squid was necessary. They weren't taking plain gulp as often as one tipped with squid. Spearing worked if you didn't mind constantly losing them to the sea bass.
I am away next week so I won't be fishing. Hope to see some good reports while I am away.
