Great day of fishing today caught my personal best porgie on my 4 ounce hammered gold jig. I also caught a big Ling. Also caught 2 short fluke a few sea Robins and short sea bass. My dad had short fluke and sea bass.

State regs are established based on fed parameters and prior year state regs. NJ has historically 'come to the table' with vigor. While I was waiting for my fish to be cleaned yesterday I heard the mates say they had 45 fares and 6 keeper fluke. I think one guy had 2. 19.5 size limit is ridiculous. Meanwhile in NJ fluke is 18 inches. And sea bass is 12.5 in NJ and 16.5 in new York. What is wrong with this picture
fluke fishing this year has been terrible. To me it's a waste of time effort and money. I use a four ounce hammered gold jig. If I happen to catch a fluke so be it. If I am doing nothing with the jig I switch over to bait. I have not caught a keeper fluke on bait in years probably over 5 years. The sea bass fishery is providing meals at home. I feel 12.5 in NJ is to small not going to get much off of that. 15 and 16 is a good regulation for sea bass.State regs are established based on fed parameters and prior year state regs. NJ has historically 'come to the table' with vigor.
In 2017, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) found New Jersey out of compliance with its fluke regulations. NJ implemented its own regulations, allowing fishing for 18-inch fish instead of the ASMFC's 19-inch size limit but creel limit reduced by 1. The ASMFC then notified the US Commerce Department, which could have imposed a moratorium on summer flounder fishing in New Jersey until the state adopted regulations that were consistent with the ASMFC's management plan. However, the US Commerce Department sided with New Jersey, and there was no moratorium on the state's fluke season.
Since then you can see what happened each subsequent year: NJ's size minimum remains < NY, while NY's bag limit > NJ.
A similar scenario plays out for Black Sea Bass, in fact NJ bag limit was recently 15.
Current state regs result from past battles with Fed regulators, that's why NJ bag limits REMAIN higher than NY.
I fish NJ and NY waters and have been involved with regulatory agencies in both states for recreational fishing. NJ support FAR EXCEEDS what I have witnessed in NY. FYI i graduated SUNY Stony Brook and attended many NY meetings there which were poorly represented by rec fishermen. Learn from history and raise your voice if appropriate, it works in NJ.
