I'm a senior at Stony Brook University and I'm doing a project on fishing and the fish population in the Great South Bay. My questions are, what species used to live in the Great South Bay, but has gone extinct or permanently migrated elsewhere? What are the ramifications of this fish not being in the bay anymore? I would need to speak to someone that can remember being out in the Great South Bay when these fish were still present. Thanks to anyone that answers.
 
Take your pick. Striped Bass are way down. Bluefish are way down. Winter Flounder are practically non existant and Weakfish used to be fairly common years ago aren't anymore. I don't like regs more than the next guy but we have proved time and time again we cannot police ourselves.
 
I would say winter flounder most affected. Used to catch them from all the docks and put together a pretty good bucket most trips. The rest move around and each year different areas become the “hot spots”.
 
Would any of you be willing to speak over the phone about this? It would be a relatively brief conversation about some of the fish that are declining/extinct from the bay and the impact it's having on the bay.

As a kid growing up in Moriches, aside from all the winter flounder we used to catch, we had a large population of bay scallops no different than the peconics variety. They have long vanished from Moriches bay.
