Great White

Not the first time and surely not the last. Whites have been here forever, inshore right on the south shore beaches, Gardiner's Bay and the Sound. There's tons of bunker , seals and a fair amount of bass around right now , all food for the mighty whitey.

You’re right, but this is the first confirmed white in the sound.

That’s crazy! So far up into the western sound. I’m on the LI side in Huntington. Trying to get on their website but the tracker is down or overloaded.

My friend swears it’s an anomaly. Relatively speaking the sound is quite narrow so the shark could have been off the south shore of LI in all reality, but pinged in the sound.

That being said water quality in the sound has gotten better and better. Seen more sea creatures & mammals in the last 8 years working off Greenwich on the Snowgoose then I can ever remember. Wouldn’t surprise me a bit if the shark was really there.

it's almost definitely a bad ping. would need multiple pings in Long Island Sound to believe that a GWS is swimming in this rain heavy, lower than usual salinity, long island sound.

I have another hypothesis instead of the bad ping, it's OCEARCH is trying to raise cash so they put Cabot somewhere that nobody would expect, e.g. Western LI Sound, off of a very well-to-do area. On their Twitter page they've commented and thanked folks for the huge donation wave since yesterday.

Just saying, but it's often a tool in the shed of fund raising groups...

Back of the napkin guess is that just off the south shore on LI (say 2 miles) straight up to Greenwich (say 1 mile off) is maybe 25-30 miles?? Is that range an acceptable margin of error for one of those GPS trackers?

I was thinking the same thing last night. Strange that the site went down completely for the tracker but all else is up
