How is your early season fluke fishing so far

The past 3-4 years I have seen a steady decline in the number of keeper-sized fluke in the Sound. It almost looks like they seem to be going right past the Peconics to points north. There are still plenty of fish on the south shore, but aside from one party boat, everyone's working those big porgy pork chops around this time of year.

I know it's early but what have you seen?

First trip to Ashrokan was a slow pick but had some keepers. Peconic with Capt Mike lock and load on porgies, 1 keeper fluke out of 3 brought up. I went out Monday out of captree. Everyone was fishing the ocean, water temp still low so the fluke are very lethargic. Really need to be slow jigging and let them chew. Boat had maybe dozen keepers. Got another private charter out of Freeport, first week of June. Will see how that goes.

Slow start down to the west but waters temps are much lower compared to last year. Even been a bit slower on birds. Hopefully we get a few good shots in the coming weeks.

Went yesterday and the birds were overwhelming. You couldn't keep you bait down without them jumping all over it. It didn't matter if it was Gulp or spearing.

Not too bad, mostly shorts. Birds have been light. Some of the locals are finding more keepers than I. Will keep at it and hope for good bodies of fish to filter into the bay.

Here in NJ our season opens tomorrow 5/22. My pre-season scouting trips were all shore-based and successful. The water is Crystal clear and you can actually see the fluke attack your bait in 15' water. Nothing more exciting when a brown blob hovers over your jig then jumps on it !!

Always wanted to try fluke from shore, i see some guy in NJ on YouTube who does very well with shore fluke

Have been catching some keep Fluke for the last couple of week.. to make my bucktail more appealing I add a spearing on the hook and just bounce bottom.. Health and good fishing to all, Sy....​

There are obviously fish around, and that spearing is a killer this time of year!
