How Long Can This Continue? Tog Slaughter

That would be Kenny. We did some crazy things back in the day. July 4th is the annual invasion (cruise) from Cherry Grove to the Pines. To be onboard you had to be Gay or Trans dressed. The outfits were over the top. I went wearing a sock. I'm almost happy we don't have photos. The gays know how to have fun even if you are a guest.

You going to write some fiction books about Cod Poaching? You present a very entertaining hypothesis, but not what actually has been happening. If you want to understand how a major operation that poached cod worked, Google "Gloucester MA Codfather Carlos Rafael" and you'll get the real story about commercial scale cod poaching. Spoiler alert, like Al Capone, it was tax evasion that put him in jail...

Fiction? , LOL , tell me where all the Cod went and why they aren't coming back ? How's the commercial cod fishing up in Maine ? what's the recreational limit up there ? 1 cod a man ? Can't be Global warming up there , must be something else like illegal fishing. I saw the whole cycle with cod the last 50 years .
Cod were way more scarce in the 1970's than they are now and just like that they came back . They aren't coming back because the commercials are taking them and the politicians up in Boston support the slaughter.

Mackerel+Herring=Cod

Find the bait, you'll find the cod. They're out there but with price of fuel and lack if interest, no one is looking for them.

I wish that was the case. When I see 3 Freeport Party Boats sailing daily for Cod I'll say they're back. That was amazing in the 1980's driving down to Freeport early in the morning and the whole end of Woodcleft Canal was a bee hive of activity with the Starstream 2, The Super Spray and the Capt. Al loaded with Codfish anglers. Same out in Captree, In Sheepshead Bay. You didn't even have to go out to Montauk back then . That's the Cod fishing I remember and sadly I'll never see that fishing again. I'm just angry about the Winter Fishing off Long Island. I can't complain about the summer fishing. Never been better in my lifetime. I didn't mean to offend anybody or start a fight with anybody.

"Give a man a fish and you will feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you will feed him for a lifetime."

I'm a Veteran from the U.S. Navy where I served as a Naval Aviator. I got out in 1981 to became an airline pilot. The controller strike, deregulation and an air crash in the Potomac River caused many airlines to go out of business and thousands of pilots were furloughed. I was one of them. Jobs were impossible to find and I had a family of five to feed. It was October 1982.

I needed money and I needed it fast. Veterans in those days did not have savings accounts. For two months I resorted to potting blue crabs in the Sore Thumb cove. When that was over, I needed to find something else to generate money. I was really good at catching codfish and had techniques no one used. While everyone caught a few fish per angler fishing on private, charter and party boats, I needed to catch more. Some of you might not like the numbers I caught while pin hooking out of Fire Island Inlet but those numbers did not cause the collapse of the codfish and I fed my family from my earnings. I fished everyday I could get out on a 25' Bertram called the Teacher's Pet. We fished in such bad conditions for a boat that size, the DEA investigated us for possibility of smuggling drugs and one day we were boarded at my slip and searched.

Below are just two pages from my logs. Nothing has been changed or highlighted. I fished with one other guy most of the time. Rory and I grew up together fishing and clamming. We were really good at it. We fished 41 days in total. My average day at the end of the season was 63 codfish while pin hooking. Average weight was 5.5lbs after gutting.

2/13/1983 was my best day. The day before there was a blizzard and we moved the boat to Captree Island due to the GSB icing over. TP was the Teacher's Pet. The temp was 13 degrees when we left the dock. It got up to a balmy 38 with calm seas. Pangaroo was right codfishing in 1982-83 was really good.

To this day, my kids still joke about all the codfish we ate that winter. It was like the scene from Forrest Gump.
